I suppose it was the only way to allow Kenai to experience romance and live a full life as a bear. If he hooked up with a human woman, it would be bestiality. If he fell in love with a female bear, it'd be weird because he's secretly a human instead of a real bear, so it might technically still count as bestiality. The lesson was to not underestimate the power of love.
As we remember from the beginning of the movie, the main character's spirit animal was the bear, and the bear symbolized love. But, he didn't like the idea of it.
Then his brother dies trying to protect him and his brother from a bear.
He becomes motivated by revenge and blinded by hate. It's only when he bonds with the baby bear is when he loses his hate and realized that love is the answer and makes his desicision to stay a bear to look out for his new found family in the baby bear.
