There is nothing lame about Storm. She's just another victim of terrible writers who think the coolest thing about her is being black.

It feels lopsided like this. They should have also drawn Black Lighting or Green Lantern (John Stewart) at minimum.

Not all of them are. Blade is cool and everyone knows it. Cyborg is if not commonly liked then at least respected. Nobody has a problem with Storm, they have a problem with the way that the X-men have been character assassinated overall in the past couple decades.

The problem is when you get to more recent black characters that are just blatant corporate cashgrab exercises. Miles is a prime example of this: he adds nothing, and exists as nothing more than a tick on the side of the spiderman franchise. Not even because he is black specifically, but because he has NOTHING going on as a character of his own (as evidenced by the fact that after all of these years he still doesn't have his own superhero name or a villain that isn't a Peter Parker sloppy seconds. Miles contributes nothing, but they won't get rid of him seemingly purely because they like the idea of having a black spiderman despite the fact that they won't give him anything to do.
THAT kind of character is what drags down perception of black superheroes overall: the ones that don't function as characters of their own without being propped up by executive brand management.

I always come back to Sam Wilson as Captain America around Secret Wars.
Before Secret Wars, Rick Remender had him for a few issues when he was getting used to the job. It wasn't a very long or inspiring arc; Zemo had a Hydra plot to something something Inhuman sterilize the planet. Sam teamed up with Ian Rogers and there was a thing with Misty Knight. Just a run-of-the-mill story that wouldn't be too out of place in any given time period.
Then, after Secret Wars, Nick Spencer is handling the character. Now Sam is on Twitter, he's getting an illegal immigrant sidekick, and it's really not endearing anyone to the character.
Those are pretty much the only two kinds of books a black hero can star in. Bland and inoffensive, or grating and soapboxy. Kinda hard to have a breakout character with either of those options.

Because in many cases, they're black first, and characters second. And being black doesn't mean anything. It's a skin color. A character needs to be compelling, you can't substitute race for character.

Also most of them have electricity powers, including fucking Miles, that Mary Sue motherfucker. Stereotypes cannot be escaped, it seems.
