Calarts is the single WORST thing to happen to animation since the toy commercial era of the 80s

>Cheap animation
>Ugly designs
>SJW filled moments
>Hack writing
>Poorly thought out loreshit

Fucccck the 80s pics are so hot
Plus I like how your can tell this was put together by a pedo because they picked Wilykit for the pic rather than Cheetara or Lion-O. Nice

The worst thing to happen to cartoons is Paw Patrol. Not because it itself is inherently that bad (it's pretty cute) but because of the horrible, ugly scramble to replicate its success.
Look at this Paw Patrol Star Trek shit

>the toy commercial era of the 80s
I really feel like I need it explained to me why this era was so bad
>nooooo you can't make a cartoon where characters are cool monsters with super powers that kids will want to buy noooo
Kids don't even have an income, it would be the parents fault for buying their kids all this shit,
>nooo kids will spend all their allowance on imaginative play instead of....uh...candy?
Oh the horror.
I didn't even grow up in this era but speaking from the perspective of a 2000s kid I was always disappointed that my favorite shows like Ed Edd n Eddy had no toys to speak of. Some of my favorite memories were coming up with scenarios for my action figures and imagining new stories with my favorite characters, how was this era more harmful than giving a kid an iPad and allowing them to watch the world's most irritating people play video games?

It's just something brainless kids are taught to parrot by Youtube "critics"
If the story comes from some stoner with a weird fetish, it is pure and original and superior in every way
If it comes from writers creating a story around kick-ass toys, it is tainted and mercenary and soulless and corporate.
No more thought into how world-building is done or how characters are developed ever follows

It just always confused me that "advertising to kids" was seen as such a horrible thing when kids literally can't buy anything unless their parents approve of it.
Even if a kid made it to KB Toys and wanted to buy every Ninja Turtle with their allowance, their parent was still there to say "no" if they wanted to.
Most of the things that were considered "toy commercials" were made by people who wanted to tell a story and the only way they could was if the company financing it could get a cut, and I don't see anything wrong with that.
Better to sell kids imaginative ideas about "being a good guy".
If anything people should have always been more upset about advertisements aimed at teenagers. Almost all of them are "you need to look and act a certain way or else everyone will hate you, buy our fucking clothes."

Two the popular "toy commercial" franchises were GI Joe and Transformers. While the cartoons indeed just a poor attempt at pedaling new toys, but the comics were good. So good. Especially GI Joe. You could clearly see that Hama put his soul into writing this comic, and it was on par in terms of quality with other comic books of its time. And I say it as a zoom zoom who didn't grow up in the 80s. ROM was also pretty great.
So yes, toy commercials can be good.

The 80’s was shit cause the most successful cartoons of that decade were made to sell toys, and so cartoons were just being greenlit by how their popular toy brand is. Not to mention how most of the animation looked like shit, it was stiff as fuck, animated by DiC Entertainment, which was hated so much by animators that there was a joke in the industry that DiC stood for "Do it Cheap", some people prefer action cartoons but come the fuck on the ones in the 90’s like Aeon Flux and Batman TAS looked far better and had more artistic integrity to them than cheesy He-Man shit. Need I also mention how executive controlled and oversanitized cartoons of that era were? TV was full of sappy shit like Care Bears and G1 Horse Show.

This is why the late 80’s and 90’s are so beloved by animators. Everything was cartoonist driven, people were given actual creative control, and many cartoons like the New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, Ren & Stimpy, and Animaniacs rebelled against the idea that cartoons should be stiff as fuck and oversanitized. Technically we are still in the creator driven era of cartoons, but it honestly feels like we’re witnessing the final breaths of it, the term "creator driven" these days should also be used very loosely seeing how, much like the 80’s shit has become highly executive controlled now.

Not to mention that shows based on pre-existing IPs are getting more views than original IPs so those are the only projects being greenlit, just like when toy cartoons were the only shit being greenlit, history is repeating itself.

>90’s like Aeon Flux and Batman TAS
That's extreme cherrypicking considering BTAS is the best looking western animated action series ever, nothing can compete with it, even if it has some episodes that look mediocre.

Anon pretty much all the fondly remembered toy cartoons were animated in Japan. Sometimes things got stiff and crappy but that's because the character designs were so ambitious. Nothing in the 90s holds a candle to the Thundercats intro.
I like creator-driven zany comedy and ambitious, potentially stiff action shows. And the likes of Bravestar and Mysterious Cities of Gold never shifted toys anyway

>I really feel like I need it explained to me why this era was so bad
It had bad writing, bad choreography, and bad animation. Most of the "action" cartoons were just slapstick comedy cartoons with realistic proportions.

There were good toy commercials like Robotech/Macross and Gundam/Gundam Wing, but those were anime and superior to western cartoons.
