Wealth has nothing to do with intelligence, it has to do with charisma. You need to be able to bullshit your way into wealth. You need to make "connections" aka get rich buddies who will give you a job at their company or give you good investment data or loans or whatever the fuck. Fuck, nowadays, even getting a NORMAL job requires you to bend over backwards to convince a bunch of HR women. You need charisma.

And sadly, as a diagnosed sperg, my charisma is zero. Normies can sniff out that shit like they're a fucking radar. You can say the most innocuous, normal thing ever and they'll start giggling and looking at you weird.

Meritocracy does exist for most, but it won't make you a billionaire. And for most, that means meritocracy doesn't exist. I know someone who went from nothing and is fast on their way to owning multiple McDonalds. They're loved by all of their bosses, score high on whatever tests they have to do, and they're quickly going from wagie to boss with a ton of money. Through merit.

Yet people will go "Yeah, but it won't make you super mega ultra wealthy, so meritocracy isn't real." I can't explain why, but that "all, or it doesn't matter" mentality makes me sad.

Yeah, same. It's very possible to boost your status through hard work, and it's even within reach to build up millions over your lifetime that you can then pass on to your kids to give them a better starting point. At the very least you can easily give them a better financial situation than you had if you try.

You probably won't become a billionaire, but you can achieve a satisfying level of wealth and success in life through hard work and creating your own opportunities.

You have something of a point, but humans are social animals. After you reach "pretty comfortable", somewhere in the low-to-mid hundreds of thousands USD yearly income, there's not really much more physical comfort or tangible benefit money can get you, in terms of immediate quality of life. The motive after that is money as a proxy for social status.

But the existence of billionaires means that the *social* status of being "rich" is now out of reach. A millionaire can't sit back and feel like they've "made it" when there exist public figures who have more money than entire nations. And they can't feel secure in what they DO have when someone could buy it all out from under them and not even feel the pinch. The "it doesn't matter" mentality IS sad, but it's not irrational; the point of being RICH rather than just well-off isn't having, it's having more than others.

Its not the select few. Or do you think a McDonald's wagie is some kind of elite class? We could be talking about YOU right now, and the only steps are

1.) Get a job at McDonalds.

2.) Do good work.

3.) Work well enough that it looks like you can handle more important work.

Save 20% minimum from wage and dump it into ETFs for 10% - 30% yearly increase.

It's not thst hard. You can make good money but it requires focusing on gradual accumulation and persistence beyond wanting money here and now. It's not a case of intelligence to get rich, it's a case of self-control. Executive functioning. Put 1k in and you will get 100-300 back. Then the following year put another 1k in for 2100 - 2300 total and get back 210 - 690. By the end of the year after that you could potentially get short of 5k on the high end, but that's assuming you are only putting away something short of 100 dollars every month. If you earn more and put away more that can quickly become 10k instead 5k in years. Now apply that to 100k saved, you will be getting 10-30k back on the first year alone and that's without a job. It's simple math, but people don't like tieing up their cash into piles because they want to use it now for the latest toy or holiday or put it into banks for guranteed certainty.

>So in other words it isn’t just about hard work and merit, it’s about luck and chance that your boss won’t just exploit you and will reward you with a good promotion every time

Sure. If you're scared, pessimistic, don't want to work, earnestly held back by "Oh, what if it doesn't work? Guess I won't try and meritocracy isn't real."

It depends on your country, what index you use and your capital investment. A lot of ETFs don't have a real minimum capital investment cap but some do. Find out what your regional broker is and then go through and look at ETFs by their yearly returns. Your broker should also seperate them into high risk or low risk, but high risk ussually means an occuasional 10% drop after a 20% or 30% increase the year before. Because I am a bong I use Vanguard and they have an ETF list which you can sort by yearly return, risk, minimum investment ect ect. But look into brokers with low service rates as I only really consider Vanguard because I know they are convient. Generally global index based ETFs are stable enough as they have a wide net of stock but slow growth, but anything in telecomunication infrastructure seems to do well. Honestly you should just do your own research. I am currently looking at VOX as that has a 27% annual return on equity but Roblox is included into the fucking stock share and I know they will be plummeting in the near future. I would stay clear from /biz/ too, they are borderline schizophrenic.

My point is that it doesn't seem like people want meritocracy. It just seems they want to be rich. We can be pedantic and say "Yeah, well merit won't make me grow wings, so meritocracy isn't real!" in the same way people say freedom of thought isn't real, technically. Absolutely ridiculous and frankly somewhat insulting. When people say they want a meritocracy and say that the super duper uber rich invalidate the system, they're not being jealous and want merit to carry them to super duper uber richdom; they're saying what they're saying: they want success according to merit, and thus those people shouldn't have super duper uber riches beyond their merit.

You can say that itself is a different kind of envy or sour grapes they shouldn't care about and should instead focus on their own personal goodwill, which there is further discussion to be had regarding, but to get that requires you ditching your preconceived notions and actually listening to people in a more honest fashion.

Sorry. From what I've seen, people will outright ignore examples of meritocracy for one reason or another that boils down to "yeah, but I can't reach this arbitrary limit, so its not real."

I've already spoken to a few people in this thread that did this same thing, so if you want to call my opinion ridiculous and insulting, you first need to explain how the reality we've seen here doesn't count. And even then, I'm willing to believe the people you've spoken to are less childish in their ideas of meritocracy, but that hasn't been my experience.

My opinion upsets you so much, you should first look at the people validating it and think that, just maybe, its a reasonable opinion to have even if you disagree.

Benefits are not designed to help people meaningfully change their station. At best they help people barely survive enough to keep working and taking on debt. People also lose food stamps if they get a raise that puts them over the income threshold by even a dollar, even when the increase in income isn’t equivalent to the food stamps or rent increases by more than the raise, putting them directly in more hardship with no support. The way you assume things work isn’t how they actually work for people who have to struggle.
