The British Invasion's Unintended Consequences
Between art, comics, and music, did the British invasion of the 80s do more harm than good and kill any potential for American Creativity?

No, if anything it lit a fire under American comic writers to step up their game.

Moore>Ennis>Millar>Milligan>Morrison>Ellis>Gaiman
If Gaiman could stop raping he’d be second after Moore. Morrison’s so low because he’s a cuck for still working for DC. Millar’s a hack but he’s one of the most financially successful so he earns the 3 spot.

I wasn't even aware there is a THIRD ongoing musical British Invasion right now until this thread. I knew about the 60's and 80's.

Looks not like a very stable invasion.

Furthermore even if it didn't happen those like Aaron, Bendis and King would still show up, so I'm not sure what psychoactives people are downing to imagine the Brits visiting to spruce up the place was what caused the residence to fall apart.

I only really like Moore's stuff.
Ennis has a few good hits, Morrison's about the same. After these, I'd pick several American writers over the rest of the Brits.
I haven't liked anything by Millar, Milligan's comics feel incomplete, Ellis has Planetary, and I liked parts of Gaiman's Sandman.

This. OP and his "British Invasion Ruined Comics" copium functionally ignores what was going on in comics

Comics were already going in darker directions with non-Brit creators. If you have to count Claremont and Byrne as Brits you've lost the argument
People were influenced by Moore but moreso Miller
Marvel was barely changed by the British Invasion during the 80s/90s
Gaiman's Sandman was a huge seller for DC but it wasn't like Gaiman's work affected the industry negatively
Bendis would've still gotten into comics
Ennis became popular in the 90s with Preacher and Hitman. You could argue that maybe there were some writers trying to be like him but I can't remember who other than Millar. Maybe Tieri?
Millar came to power unintentionally because DC didn't approve that Superman 2000 pitch

Because what we are sold as "typical british cynicism" is all of these fuckers are atheists and or occultists, into anarchy and communism, and more interested in decontruction stories than stories where a thing is earnestly built up. And before they "invaded" it was more normal for a lot of superhero writing to sincerely be supporting the values of the title character not deconstructing them or injecting weird meta occultist ideas. I think people didnt see this when it was happening because it was a fresh perspective but these are the unintended consequences that I see, everyone wanted to be Watchmen they didnt understand Watchmen was a esleworld parody not intended to be Alan Moores ideal superhero world.

What killed comics was the dumb gimmicks leading to the speculation bubble and the crash of the 90s, which destroyed comics as a great American pastime with more than 50% of the shops closing. So many of these gimmicks are still at play.

The British Invasion and its consequences NEEDS to be seen in this context. I think that because of the crash, the perception of the British Invasion was multiplied. Comics massively lost any cultural relevancy so people clung onto things like Watchmen as a lift raft proving comics to be deep, mature or worth saving. These works needed to be BUILT upon but the industry was in no real state to do that and most of the lessons people took from the British Invasion were completely the wrong one.

People addicted to gimmicks will make gimmicks out of stuff people like or respond to. And that was the issue. People like Moore have criticised this but a lot of anons take his comments out of context to rage at him because people both recognise his importance in the medium whilst feeling attacked. The problem is just the audience and creatives misunderstood what people wanted out of these things, they were overvenerated which lead to problems and self hatred.

This. The “British Invasion” really had fuck-all to do with the general direction of comics which was driven by Marvel and their top guys, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, and Jim Lee who were just doing shit they thought was cool which, at the time, was commando, Stallone/Schwarzenegger shit.

I mean, the US has always had good writers. It's just that within the BIG 2, you didn't have the best the US had to offer, and what was good was limited to CC and editorial decisions. UK writers just took the liberties that were left to them and used them to write their own stuff. A lot of the shit that UK writers did in the 80s had already been done in the US as early as the 50s.

Millar should be at the very end, I've read a lot of his work and not a single thing he's written is exceptional while I can think of at least one example for all the others. He's like a more retarded Geoff Johns.

sometimes yes but a lot of the time they revealed themselves to be one trick ponies over time. For example Grant morrison just pulls the same shit every chance he gets if youve read animal man youve essentially read all his stuff.
