It wasn't trying to be clever. It's always more important or a story to be thematically coherent than try to outsmart the audience or whatever. And the Kents being Clark's real parents has been a thing in like, the vast majority of Superman material.

I like it. It is a departure from always having Clark to have this hold on his blood relatives who did not raise him and instill their way of life. He was raised in America, by farmers in Kansas, in a small town.

You seen it in the Donor films to. Jor'El has this god like hold on how he should be without ever actually living as them. It is comically inhuman to live in a way you never experienced.

To be more relatable to mankind is to live as them already. Everyone is different, and have their own desires in how they want to live among each other. Clark being an alien yet looking human is like being a giant among dwarves. They are all the same either way.

Clark is the last of his kind. Imagine for a moment you are the last white/black/chink/etc and you have last books about the history of your race/country and a DVD with the last words of your biological family. Are you telling me you would drop all of that just because other people raised you? And honestly, Gunn and his fans are nothing but pretentious faggots. They just want to be different for the sake of being different, even if doesn't make sense. People's problem with this plot point isn't that he should have taken over Earth because his Kryptonian parents said to, it's that that was even the plot in the first place. Why did they have to write it as "Earth parents good, alien parents bad"? It makes Superman way more boring to remove the main source of his pathos.

>Why did they have to write it as "Earth parents good, alien parents bad"?
to highlight earth as his home by choice
its where he was raised and its what he has known, which is more important than a distant place he has never set foot
its exactly how it was done by john byrne, where jor-el muses that he might rule over earth thanks to his powers

Why are people acting like him caring at all about Krypton means he cares more about it than Earth? No one is saying that.
>its exactly how it was done by john byrne, where jor-el muses that he might rule over earth thanks to his powers
That's not the same as saying he should conquer Earth, and Byrne's interpretation is shit anyway.

>But it's not, his Kryptonian parents picked it.
it is his choice what he considers his real parents, his biological ones or the ones who actually raised him

>Why are people acting like him caring at all about Krypton means he cares more about it than Earth?
because when you highlight his longing for a planet he has never known, never seen, and has had little impact on his upbringing, you create a character he seems to care more about ghosts than the living
making kryptonians less of squeaky clean immediately forces superman puts a superman at a crossroads, what he has been defining himself as this whole time goes against his own values
which reinforces the theme that who you choose to be matters more than where you come from, just because his parents are jerks does not mean he has to be

>That's not the same as saying he should conquer Earth
you can clearly draw a line in characterization from the more morally ambiguous krypton envisioned by byrne and gunn superman
Anonymous No.150774185 [Report] >>150774247

>it is his choice what he considers his real parents
Why does he have to choose who his "real parents" are? He has two sets of parents that each mean different things to him.
>because when you highlight his longing for a planet he has never known, never seen, and has had little impact on his upbringing, you create a character he seems to care more about ghosts than the living
Again this is not true and makes no sense. Why does him caring about Krypton at all mean he doesn't care about Earth? Knowing that his entire planet was lost makes him care more deeply about the Earth and how fragile it is.
>you can clearly draw a line in characterization from the more morally ambiguous krypton envisioned by byrne and gunn superman
Yes and it's a dumb line that shouldn't be drawn.

>Again this is not true and makes no sense
when you make him into such an overt-follower of kryptons ways, to the point that he uses kryptonian expressions, goes by kal-el, and lives in a kryptonian-style fort
you get the impression that he is idolizing people he has never met and knows nothing about

>Knowing that his entire planet was lost makes him care more deeply about the Earth and how fragile it is.
people can and have wrote this story
but gunn wrote a story where he instead chooses the loving family who raised him over over the distant family with values that do not fit in with the ones he was raised with

>Yes and it's a dumb line that shouldn't be drawn.
it shows that this version of evil krypton is no less comic-accurate than the all-good, perfect krypton of the silver age or jor-el being the sole good kryptonian in an evil krypton
Anonymous No.150774288 [Report]

>you get the impression that he is idolizing people he has never met and knows nothing about
In those stories he does know a lot about them. He's preserving the legacy of his lost home.
>but gunn wrote a story where he instead chooses the loving family who raised him over over the distant family with values that do not fit in with the ones he was raised with
And it was boring, it makes him way less interesting as a character if he just disregards his heritage. People don't get that Superman being an alien and all that entails is what makes him interesting. Otherwise he's just a superstrong flying man no different from his many knockoffs.
>it shows that this version of evil krypton is no less comic-accurate
Why should I care if it has a precedent in the comics? It's a bad take on the character. The version I like has far more comics backing it up anyway.

Yeah because it would mean absolutely nothing to me because I never knew or lived any of this and only knew the people and world that raised me. It's like finding a book in your 30s from your great grandfather you never knew telling you to give up your hard won million dollar career to own a bass fishing store because it was his dream and he wants you to live it. >Rather than make the stretch that every other Kryptonian that somehow made it is evil like Zod
How is that more of a stretch than the entire race being evil? And based on interviews Gunn did after the film came out he's a bit cagey about saying what the rest of the Kryptonians were like. The Supergirl movie is based on a comic about her grieving Krypton so presumably not everyone there is cartoonishly evil, but in that case Jor-El and Lara were exceptionally bad among Kryptonians which is even worse than them just being typical of a supremacist society.

>And the Kents being Clark's real parents has been a thing in like, the vast majority of Superman material.

Yes, that's exactly why it's bizarre that Gunn went with this plotline, since it heavily implies that up until the message reveal, Clark didn't value the Kents as much as his ideal of Jor-El and Lara. Not only that, having their intentions be at complete odds with his personal mission statement completely destroys the impact of choosing Earth and the Kents. In what world could he possible honor their wishes without becoming a tyrant?

There is not a single thing ever even proving to him he is the last of his kind. It's all hearsay. What's matter is he learns to embrace the part of his heritage that isn't hearsay - the people who actually love and raised him, and let go of abstract symbols.

It doesn't matter whether his Krypton parents were evil or not, his realization is that the question of their morality is less important than what his actual caretakers taught him and how that's made him who he is.
