I always assumed part of the joke was that they were this "all American high school sweethearts" couple in high school and just, y'know, aged.
Like, you look at young Hank, he's got a good hairstyle, a good athletic build, is a generally capable provider, and yet he, like his wife, just got older.
Peggy was this young energetic woman who ended up not doing much with her life and not achieving what she believes to be her full potential. So it screwed her over.

Peggy is the quintessential failed queen bee. She's technically hot. She's technically talented. She technically has confidence and a way with people. She technically is a good person. Problem is, she knows all of these things, and is in that mindset where she doesn't necessarily thinks that puts her above others but nevertheless believes she's a "better kind" of person, which ends up keeping her from properly being any of those other things because she ends up A) smug and abrasive to others and B) doesn't think she actually has to put effort into those things, so it remains half-baked/unfulfilled.
