Combination of the motion capture guy being of different ethnicity (he was originally white Hispanic guy who also played Johnny Cage, then replaced with an Italian American) and the fact that Subzero died in the first Mortal Kombat game and replaced with a different heroic Subzero due to his popularity and the whole "Subzero killed Scorpion and his family" thing.
