Genndy didn’t want to bring spear back, he wanted to do an anthology (which is a way better idea) but the executives at WB made him go back to Spear and Fang. Spear being a zombie is an allegory for the show being a zombie itself in an act of self sabotage.

Genndy can say whatever he wants about the ending of season 2 not sitting right with him, we know how he really feels.
