Thank goodness that animation crew was put to better use at DreamWorks, because Amblin and Spielberg were wasting their talent on weak scripts.

>Any specific projects you worked on?
>Yep. Started first doing animation as an assistant, first for Amblimation in London, for a movie called Balto, then moved to L.A to work on The Prince of Egypt and The Road to El Dorado for DreamWorks. That was an exciting experience for a lot of reasons, many on a personal level, but also meeting and working with so many talented artists

I'm honestly really deeply fascinated how they went from making technically well-animated movies with average depth and stories, to Prince of Egypt, which is legitimately better than anything from the Disney Renaissance. I don't completely understand how they pulled that off, but it's akin to watching a regular wimpy person turn into a Greek superhuman in just a few of years. It's astonishing how they did it. Even in mainstream Hollywood films it's ultra rare to see that level of skill.

>This was the start of a fabulous run in animation. I went from Dublin to London, where I worked at Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation on American Tail: Fievel Goes West, We’re Back!, and Balto. They were fun years. When Amblimation moved to Los Angeles, and Dreamworks was formed, I went too and got to experience the company’s heady beginning days, working on The Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Spirit, and Sinbad. When computer animation was introduced, things changed for me. I loved the drawing part of animation and found that without that I was not so enamored. For me, animation was all-consuming, a lifestyle rather than a job.

Who was responsible for these movies having mid scripts. That's the real question.

Prince of Egypt wasn't quite as successful as they expected

>make an epic movie starring A-list celebrities with a very heavy subject matter and lots of original music
>its only a moderate success
>make an irreverent comedy with pop culture references that takes the piss out of disney
>its a mega hit
cant even blame people for coming out in droves to watch shrek over prince of egypt

Honestly the problem with Prince of Egypt is it was too Jewish. And I don't mean that as a pejorative, it's a great movie, but there was zero attempt to bring in the Christian fundie crowd that would have made it truly successful. A targeted marketing strategy in the South would have been all that was needed. For proof, see Passion of the Christ.

Yup, The other wolf movie Alpha and Omega is like the new Land Before Time; they're like 14 of those things.

I already did, but okay.
>the film is clearly intended for Jewish audiences, who are a minority of the population
>there is no attempt in the marketing to entice Christian audiences, no use of a Christian actor to serve as a spokesperson
>Christian Churches shrug and don't really care
>your movie doesn't do as well as it should
Compare that with Passion of the Christ, where churches were key to bringing in a large audience. The movie is about Judaism, but it never had to appeal or be marketed exclusively towards Jews or 'general audiences'. Christian Churches were the real audience all along, and you can appeal to them without changing anything about the film.
