I feel like for the last year, I have been seeing an increase in layoffs and rants by unemployed artists saying how they haven't been able to get work for awhile.

Is the industry in its death throws or something? If this were any other point, I would just say it's a minor downhill point and a new surge will happen. But it seems like the combination of a failed union strike, failing streaming services, and AI tech is literally killing the industry. Like, this might go the way of video games where only a couple of mainstream places survive and everyone else is left to struggle as an independent.

Most people in the industry didn't do that, though. There was a silent group of artists who just wanted to work, fill up their resume, and have a steady job. But they were beholden to dumbass producers and executives who thought Twitter was a good way to gauge general reaction, so they promoted only the most insufferable liberal artists to leadership positions to match the opinions on Twitter. You still need the artist to create the characters and create a database for the AI but a lot of the lower level work is dead.

On top of that, the United States is in denial about being in a recession, and the consequences of that recession are rippling outward. Everyone is trying to cut costs, which means consumers are less likely to pay for luxuries they can do without and companies are less likely to pay for expensive animated shows.

Yes, the pandemic fucked up the economy and Biden holds some of the blame in that. Basically, during the Reagan era is when the myth took off that the prosperity of the american citizen depended on them going to college, and armed with a college degree we would be marked for great paying comfy middle class jobs. Any work that didn't require such a degree become, by omission, not a job for "real americans". These non-degree jobs became relegated to lower class people work, either undocumented immigrants or people who were unable or unwilling to go to college, both of them assumed to be equally "undeserving".
As these jobs became synonymous with immigrant labor, despite the fact that the majority of such work is done by American citizens, it became politically convenient to target such workers as racist dogwhistles. Punishing brown people, and all of the poor white folks that worked the same jobs as brown people. The fact that they were able to get away with doing this for so long as rotted away the bottom rungs of our economy, leaving it nonfunctional even for american citizens, because we don't care how many white people catch a bullet as long as we are shooting at immigrants when we pull the trigger.

Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia are on Netflix and get american theater releases, and they consistently make money doing it. Makoto Shinkai movies do the dramatic animation game and are wildly successful even in American markets. Frieren and Apothecary Diaries even broken into the normiesphere more than any cartoon in recent memory.

There are too many artists who simply do not want to network and simply want recruiters to just notice them on social media. You see so many unemployed artists because frankly, many of these people didn't deserve a spot in the industry to begin with. They got lucky during a thriving bubble, got one or two jobs, and now think they're just as much a part of the industry as people working since the 90's. That anon is not completely wrong. By 2013 or so Twitter became the primary means of landing a studio job. While at the exact same time most companies turned Twitter into their largest source of market research and then got right to work catering to whatever trends were happening on Twitter.

Companies were largely blindsided by the insane and ridiculous antics of the obsessed addicted Twitter members and turned their rants into slogans etc. But this was not some targeted scheme, it was out of touch boomers who had no idea what they were taking and turning into advertising campaigns. They just saw cool buzzwords and things teens were into so they took that and slapped it on a sign in a store.

For animation industry workers, Twitter was a huge boon since people could network with working professionals directly, and post their artwork at the same time in the same space. Social media being social media fucked with this whole plan since the names with the biggest follower counts and highest popularity tended to be the terminally online Twitter schizos, so they floated to the top much faster. Lots of other people saw this and imitated them and being a Twitter schizo became a form of playing the game to get a job. Normal people keeping their opinions to themselves never cold compete since they were not noticeable enough.

It's an unfortunate accident how things fell into place when everyone turned to social media for all things in the late 2010s.

No, the fact is that Hollywood is experiencing a crisis since the coff. The amount of productions that still are filmed there is the minority and instead many productions moved to Vancouver and Atlanta. But even if the crews are cheaper compared to California, the movie industry is still hurting from the Covid and the new places to make a film cheaper is in England's countryside and Eastern Europe.

The website isn't the problem, the industry being so anemic that it is effectively bottlenecked by a shockingly small group of people who just naturally reward people they know and like over complete strangers is the issue. If the US animation industry was putting out 60 shows a year, connections would still be good bu they wouldn't be required to such a degree. But we don't get 60 shows a year, we get like 8.

They always inform all students that the industry is tiny, everyone knows everyone and word gets around super fast about anybody. It has only shrunk so much more post 08 recession and writers strike shrinking the number of productions so much more. Animation in the US was largely a friend's club.
