When this guy showed up and it turned out he was in jail all this time, how does that make sense? He was supposed to be trailer trash and he got attacked by Luannes's mom and Luannes's mom was in jail and Luanne wasn't traumatized for it, so why was Peggy keeping it a secret that his brother was also in jail? It makes no sense. It feels like they had no idea how to keep the show going, this wouldn't have happened in earlier seasons.

The entire point of this episode and story was to have Lucky step up and prove to Peggy that he’s worthy of her niece. It feels like they wrote backwards from that and made Peggy’s brother evil to justify the story.

In general the digital seasons are very loose with continuity when it comes to characters’ backstories. Like the episode about Peggy’s mother that changed her mom’s appearance and personality from when we saw her in season 2 (but weirdly kept the same voice actress).

KotH never got bad, but comparing the Luanne’s dad episode to the Luanne’s mom episode from season 2 is like comparing the high Minor Leagues to the Major Leagues. In their prime they could go really dark without ever feeling like a Very Special Episode.

The series never cared for continuity anyway since it always reversed just about every single end of episode resolution. Half of them were ignored immediately after the credits rolled.

Peggy's own story changed a lot, including the design of her mother and where she lived.

Start of the series:

>Luanne's dad works on an oil rig, which he can leave for a few days a year
>Peggy's mom was a homemaker, they moved from Montana to Texas when Peggy was in middle school, and she looks like a older fat version of Peggy who doesn't like her cooking, but is still on good terms with her

End of Series
>Luanne's dad was a criminal in jail who hadn't seen his daughter since she was prepubescent. The oil rig was a lie to keep Luanne from being sad; may have ALWAYS lived with the Hills

Meanwhile, Hank's side of the family's history is rock solid.

Not true, the earlier seasons had a small sense of continuity. It wasn't much, but it was there. Like Bobby and Connie dating or Luanne's boyfriend who dies and we see her moving on. Hell, Bobby and Joseph started puberty through the show but at some point they decided to lean on the floating timeline side of things ala Simpsons and refused to age the characters again until the reboot.

Judge and Daniels actually got more involved in Season 7 (after the season 6 showrunners either left or were forced out), but Daniels cut off involvement with the show sometime around 8 or 9, I don’t know why.

I do know Judge was publicly not happy with the wackier tone of a lot of season 4-6 and pushed for more grounded episodes. So in the later seasons they rarely do anything as crazy as “Hank was born in New York because of his dad’s scheme to kill Castro” or “Bill steals a tank” (to name the two episodes they were originally going to write off as Bill’s dreams).

One problem I have with the revival is it doesn’t have the variety that prime KotH did; between a lot of the broader comedy characters being gone (Luanne) or downplayed (Dale, Kahn) and Judge’s preference for realism, I miss when we didn’t know if we’d get a realistic, crazy or dark episode.

in the episode Peggy says it's because Luann's dad is the last person in her family that Luann idolizes, so she doesn't want to ruin the illusion that he's an oil man instead of what he actually is, which is a con man

And yes, he makes fair points, especially about how the writers did so many “Peggy is an egomaniac” jokes that they turned her into an object of viewer hatred without ever really meaning to. But trying to keep the characters from changing too much doesn’t really bring them back to what they were, and the later seasons are notorious for recycling the familiar stories over and over.

Fox pretty much banned them from doing that in the later seasons; they were able to make some status quo changes like getting Peggy out of teaching (the Spanish thing having been milked to death) but nothing like letting Bobby get older or Bill staying with Kahn’s mother.

The entire episode is incompatible with the show's canon. It was made partly out of spite and malice, as Mike Judge never intended on ever showing Luanne's dad on screen in spite of fans wanting to meet him and Judge being a pathetic star fucker who wanted to hang out with Johnny Knoxville AND Tom Petty at the same time.

Because they probably didnt want her to feel bad about both of her parents being in jail and he most likely told her that himself and Peggy didn't have the nerve to tell her the truth. You can see that he uses her care for Luanne against her.
