Season 5 was highly demanded by fans, to see a proper ending to Jack's neverending quest of returning to the past and finishing off Aku. With the announcement it would be on Adult Swim instead of Cartoon Network, people were more hyped as Genndy wouldn't have to limit himself to the violence he showed (and probably some swearing). I think it's important to note that this season came out at the same time as Rick & Morty s3, cause that gives you an idea of what people liked at the time.
Episodes 1-3 were fantastic, acclaimed by all. Although some inconsistencies started showing with Jack's moral dilemma of having taken his first HUMAN life. I don't remember if they retconned his fight against the 6 mercenaries here or before, but that led to a lot of questioning about his behavior before.
Episode 4 is where the pace started to slow down. Episode 6 felt like filler in a 10 episode season. Episode 7 was making things interesting again only for 8 to feel like another filler (or more so an excuse to make Jack and Ashi bang).
Episode 9 was picking up the pace slowly, only to rush everything in episode 10 and giving you the most "what the fuck?" ending possible. Since Ashi is a daughter of Aku, she has his power, including time travel. Both go back, kill Aku, who know how much time passes cause Jack and Ashi are wedding, but just as she steps into the altar, she vanishes because of time travel paradox.
Last thing we see of Jack is him picking himself up from the saddest moment in his life, to ponder at the future with optimistic hope.
