This is actually not true, but that's what makes them dangerous. There are people who are just weekend warriors and a lot of people start off that way. It's not uncommon for drug users to start using these heavier substances because they know people who are able to use them and remain functional.
If the Hollywood version of using these drugs once or twice and becoming instantly fucked was true, they would be easier to avoid. They're dangerous because that's the assumption, but when people try them, they find that they can control their use. The problem is once you start to slide, the descent is super steep and fast and at that point you are royally fucked.
