THIS. Even the few times they do pair up the titular duo in later seasons, their dynamic doesn't flow quite as well as it used to. It's fine to expand to stories involving the larger cast, but Rick and Morty have to remain the writers' priority above all else. That upcoming President spin-off is highly indicative of how little self-awareness the current creative team has. "Rick and Morty But Without Rick and Morty" is NOT the easy sell they think it must be.
I disagree about the current writers "[taking] the show too seriously," though. They still TRY to balance Harmon's character drama with Roiland's wacky humor, but the latter only ever lands maybe half the time, often resorting to gore or the cringiest sex jokes when they can't think of anything more clever.
