Problem there is that the therapist was basically made into a mind ninja. A therapist character can be a great tool for writers if you know how to use one. Like the one in the Sopranos because the whole thing hinged around how utterly helpless he felt with a client who was ultimately just a validation seeking psychopath with no desire to work on himself.

Therapy is a fun avenue to explore a characters psyche but it isn’t always accurate to the therapy experience. I’ve been to a lot of therapy and usually you’re just paying someone to ask how your day was.
Anonymous No.151161949 [Report]
I think therapy is compelling because we all quietly want it to be a magic cure all solution for all our mental strife.

But I know that's not true.

I hate this episode because it shows that Helga was antagonistic since she was younger and its a choice for her to act so cruel to Arnold. And don't bother saying "Harold was making fun of her" Harold is scared of Helga and has been for years after she injured him during the flashback. So Helga being a bully to Arnold is simply a choice. And because its a choice she getting an undeserved happy ending is such vile garbage.

The Jungle Movie is trash. Hey kids be an abusive bully for years and your crush will like you back. Awful moral. A few good deeds that Helga does doesn't excuse her multi year abuse of Arnold.

>>151163157
Helga is only outwardly mean to Arnold, you have to consider all the kind things she does for him when he isn't looking. Actions > words.

This is how a lot of childhood crushes end up. Some kid gets it in their head to obsess over some other kid for the slightest of reasons and imagine they are their one true forever love (even if they're not even in a real relationship).

And Helga's obsession with Arnold is NOT treated as normal because she literally has a shrine made to him created out of his discarded bubble gum. Part of why therapy works in a show like Hey Arnold is because many of the characters do have mental issues but toned down just enough to be appropriate for a children's TV show. Helga is a stalker, Curly >>151161064 is like a parody of school shooters, Helga's mom is an alcoholic with her smoothies, Chocolate boy is basically a metaphor for drug addiction, there's homeless bums on the street.

Compare Arnold's grandma who clearly has some form of elderly dementia to BoJack's mom who also got dementia when older. One is often treated as a joke they can play off as the grandma just being eccentric and whacky and the other is made to be depressing.

Arnold's grandmother does not have dementia. The joke with her is like all grandmother characters during the late nineties and early 2000s is that she's the Extreme Grandma. Basically despite she being old she's able to do activities that you would think only young people would do like dog sledding during the snow episode, surfing during the Spring Break episode, or even pull a literal criminal breaking in heist during the turtle episode. So yeah lets not overreach. On that note Arnold's grandfather is also played up as being rather fit and capable in a lot of episodes, ironically the ONE episode where Arnold's grandfather was treated as a real old man without stamina is the one with the swimming shark competition where he wanted to win against his former best friend.

>Arnold's grandmother does not have dementia.
There's a scene where Arnold walks by and Grandma is doing a handstand and doesn't even recognize him. Grandpa has to tell her it's Arnold, she says "who?" Grandpa: "Our Grandson". "Oh we should introduce him to the nice little blond boy that was just here".

She was always saying crazy shit like that so she wasn't just "Extreme Grandma".

Hey Arnold was pretty good at implying a lot of stuff about characters but not outright explicitly telling the audience.

So for example it was pretty obvious Arnold's teacher was gay. You can tell just from the way he talks and carries himself. He didn't act comically flamboyant but I could still tell he was gay years before the creator confirmed it after the fact. Compare that to Arthur where the kids go to Mr Ratburn's gay wedding (I mean what kind of teacher even invites their students to their wedding, gay or straight?).
Anonymous No.151164207 [Report] >>151164455
>>151163901
Yep, the problem isn't that Ratburn is gay (well, up to the individual), it's that what teacher would involve the students they teach to their wedding? Like sure, if Arthur and Ratburn had a mentor/student thing going like after school I could see it, but the way it played out? Nah.

Well many older cartoons could still bring up politically awkward messages but they at least had some tact about it. Like look at pic-related from the old Teen Titans show. It obviously a metaphor for racism but since the writers had some restraint it comes across as sort of funny that much of the audience would immediately think it's due to him being black instead of being part robot.

It's not beating you over the head with "IT'S BECAUSE I'M BLACK AND WHITES BE RACIST BLACKS LIVES MATTER".

Your direct relative should never teach in your class. I don't even think that's allowed in real public schools. Like if your mother or sister teaches in your school you would never be assigned to their class for obvious reasons.

I have a friend whose been doing therapy for like a year, he's a nice guy but he does have some significant flaws in how he handles his relationships (both platonic and romantic). However from talking to him, it sounds like he's just been told he's great and he just needs to heal from past trauma? Feels like kinda of a scam

Seeing it from an older perspective and within my family. This show is much sadder in that respect that from the very beginning we think granny is an old kook because she is old or always was, but grandpa isn't. Which only stands to reason she has dementia and Arnold is use to her mind going. It didn't just happen suddenly but gradually.

You can be very lively and active at an old age but your mind is just... go.

Half of Olga's character is that she adores Helga (and Helga fails to understand this) so I don't know how this is supposed to work, unless Olga was kept so busy by her parents that she didn't have time.

Olga adores Helga, but she never actually knew her while growing up due to her being the golden child. They never had that bond moment. Olga tries to get to know her more, but Helga still resents her for her golden child status.
...Which ultimately lets the sisters bond a little.
