Seriously? Does Disney know that among fairy tales Sleeping Beauty is one of the least popular ever? The only reason their adaptation has any fame is Maleficent. No one cares about the other characters. Sleeping Beauty is up there with other failure fairy tales like the Frog Prince.

If Disney is looking for fairy tales to do why not Puss in Boots, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rumpelstiltskin. I know they almost tried Jack and the Beanstalk but the point is there's options. There's no need to do ideas they already did especially when the concept isn't very good. Sleeping Beauty is seriously a bad story.

When you use Disney's mascot characters it doesn't count. On that note Mickey's Christmas Carol, Three Musketeers, Prince and Pauper don't count as legit adaptations of those tales.

A lot of their live action remakes don't fail. Their tacky sequels also tend to make too much money like how Wreck it Ralph 2 made more money than the first. Things like that and people still go to their theme parks anyway. They haven't truly endured the losses that they should. Not like Warner who you know is starving.

Yknow. Every time a major studio or somebody takes an already popular european fairytale or white person IP and then resets it someplace more “exotic,” that’s one less folktale or story already native to that region that they coulda done instead. In a weird way it’s actually kind of racist, white washing, and culturally appropriating to just ignore a culture’s stories and shallowly slap their aesthetic on your own that you already got right the first time. Especially if you’re doing it just to capitalize on a pre existing popular brand using nostalgia bait.

Anon you can cherry pick all the little wins you want. They're at a $21 milllion loss in the movie division this quarter. And their streaming division is in the hole for almost $5 billion. Those two things are tied to one another. Yes it has a lot of parts, I am talking about their TV & Film divisions, and by extension their streaming since many of their projects are geared with elevating subscriber numbers. They aren't doing well and haven't for some time. They've run Marvel and Pixar into the ground.

That would actually be a cool reimagining. Like that one Romeo and Juliet movie but it was in a modern day urban setting. I feel like more people would be open to ideas like that were it not for people trying to push a message.

"What if sleeping beauty was mexican?" is fun. "We need a latinx Sleeping Beauty for Diversity because there's NEVER female bipoc leads in movies!" is not fun.

Hey man, I liked Princess and the Frog, even if I agree with the woke crowd that Tiana was a frog for just slightly too much of the movie. This is despite me being commonly labeled as a "racist", it's one of my favorite Disney movies, top 10.

The best kind of "diverse" remake they can do is when they completely mix it up and do something new with it.
Like, The Little Mermaid live action remake was S-tier hot garbage because they took Ariel and just crammed diversity into it without really doing anything to the story, then tried to force Blariel to be the "canon" one, even to the point of making a show for toddlers so that ten years later, someone be watching the OG TLM and the kid's like "why is she white?" and probably throwing a tantrum because a kid in the 2030s will probably be a literal demon at the rate things are going.

PatF barely had anything to do with past iterations of the story, they spun their own fun out of it while keeping the frog kiss bit intact with a spin, AND they didn't have to make the story about racism TOO much despite being about a broke black woman in the racist south. It kept the classic "Disney Magic" with a wide variety of music, animation, silly talking animals, voice acting, and emotions, plus Facilier being god-tier, which is Peak Disney.
It got me to try Cajun/Creole food, I still make gumbo every now and then, and my roux continues to get darker every time; I feel like good Disney movies should make the viewer hungry at least once.

Doesn't matter that it's a big blackwashed story, they took their own spin on it and didn't directly try to replace the original story.

Not to mention they changed the setting to a place where a sizeable black population would make sense instead of acting like Medieval Europe had a lot of blacks.

i feel like there's a difference between adapting a story they didn't do before, and doing a live action remake of a beloved film in their catalog. this sleeping beauty mess sounds more like the former than the latter

and yknow even good disney did it. both little mermaid and frozen change the original setting of the stories. tlm makes it a mediterranian setting, and frozen makes its kingdom faux-norway, when they were original danish tales. doesn't hurt anything.

To be fair, pretty much all the Disney Classics are nearly complete rewrites, so it's closer to the Tiana PatF than it is to black Ariel TLM, taking something and doing something new with it, as opposed to taking something well-known and shitting on it then claiming anyone that prefers the original is just a racist bigot Nazi.
