ITT: Tell me what you think about the current state of the comic industry
Anonymous No.151221643 [Report]
I’ve been waiting for it to burn to the ground for 35 years now and i’ve just about given up hope. At least there’s always the old stuff to go back to.

It's in shambles. Every new comic I pick up is mediocre at best.
So far, I've checked out:
>Batman: Dark Patterns
>Batman and Robin: Year One
>Absolute
>Ultimate
>The Power Fantasy
>We're Taking Everyone Down With Us
>Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees
>The Moon is Following Us
>Exquisite Corpses
>The Seasons
>Space Ghost
I'm still aiming to read Assorted Crisis Events, Kaya, and the Ghost Machine books, but I have little faith in them.

It's bad and honestly, it feels like anyone with taste left a long time ago. Looking at /co/, these motherfuckers eat up the most mediocre crap imaginable and are obsessed with capeshit. Back in the day at least /co/ knew events were bullshit,. nowadays events get 10x more discussion than the (shitty but) currently running well liked runs.

Indies are always great, but I wonder if there's any way to make comics more attractive to the general public. Outside of the Big 2, and honestly outside of Image.

The answer is >>151221968 as a direct result of >>151221911

The current comics industry is beyond salvaging because the bar for quality has dropped well below what anyone shoulder have ever tolerated, and it still never got so bad that comics fans stopped buying it. DC and Marvel have managed to poison the industry so thoroughly that you honestly have better odds of getting a normie to believe you that this hentai you want to show them legitimately has plot and worldbuilding thats worth sitting through all of the porn scenes for than you are to convince that normie that any given comic is actually good and they should read it.

Anonymous No.151222236 [Report]

Lumping in DC with Marvel is disingenuous, the former always did try to put out some quality content out there and didn't have the sleazy, scammy and hate filled attitude that the latter ever had. Furthermore, Image is a bigger stain on the history of the industry and to this day they have failed to truly make masterpieces, if I were to make a collage of the best 25 comics in history, I could easily fill half of it with DC comics but no Image comic would actually make that cut.

I know comics are still niche but I noticed there are more younger fans who know capeshit like the back of their hand
Say what you will about Absolute Batman, it's got new readers (and more importantly people buying)
Say what you will about Invincible but its animated adaptation helped get people more interested in comics outside of Marvel/DC (and unfortunately not beyond more capeshit)

It occured to me that no one reads comics for fun any more. There are no uplifting, inspiring adventures.

Kamala Khan was fun for a long time, but even now she's been dragged down into the X-men's nihilistic mud.

Comics constantly talk about how shitty their world is and how meaningless any changes to the status quo are, and frankly, I'm tired of it. It feels cowardly. Either have the world not be that bad, or stop acting like calling out how shitty it is is addressing it in any meaningful way.
Anonymous No.151230243 [Report] >>151252322
i've been reading old comics from the past. there is some really good stuff. independent comics all want to be like image and there is a weird cult-like following around them not in a good way. they take conflict marketing too seriously and lie about it.

it makes sense when the bigger independent comics are ran by people who have mormon backgrounds, its always the mormons

I thought things were bad in 2010 when it came to the big 2. 15 years later, and it's somehow gotten far, far worse than I could have ever imagined. We're at the point now where the average person is more likely to have read a manga at one point in their life than a comic book. There's always been dumb shit in comics, but never to the extent where dumb shit feels like the norm. Decades of retards in management has allowed sycophants, talentless hacks, and amateurs to not only succeed, but thrive and bring in their friends in a race to the bottom. On top of that, with the advent of social media, you have lolcows constantly in the making or people going witchhunting and purity testing each other for no fucking reason, which leads to people or projects getting sacked or changed around.

The biggest problems facing comics for the past two decades has been degeneration, not so much the political virtue signaling or the desexualization which are always in a pendulum, just more of an emphasis on putting out unvetted slop for the masses. Nothing sucks more than watching retards like Felker-Martin or Ziglar somehow land writing positions when they would've been laughed out of the offices 20 years ago, and then the CEOs are all wondering why the fuck teens are all reading manga.

I think it's a corpse

Basically it's dead already, but kept limping along on the momentum of being a popular IP farm for Disney and Warner Bros. Once the movie well runs dry they are going to be less than second rate because the comics cannot really make money on their own as entertainment any longer. And if not for the fact that they were bought up by major media companies, they would be dead and gone by now.
Anonymous No.151255970 [Report] >>151255977
>>151255848
this, they've been kept alive by the movies, but they've not been doing so hot lately. All it's going to take is one bad quarter and they'll start gutting unproductive parts of the company, and comics are going to be on that chopping block.
It's not really fair to call them an IP farm, because all their usable ideas came from the 40's-80's, they haven't really made anything new since then.

You can tell that the company as a whole sees the comics part as a waste of time because they don't even bother to advertise them in the movies or videogames. They could easily sell 100k+ copies of any comic if they offered free Marvel Rivals skins with your comic issue, but they don't because they don't think comics have any value whatsoever to the company.

Feeling dejected. Empty. I don't feel like I have a stake in it anymore, I think few people do. Former megahits are now modest hits and former modest hits are now nothing at all. Only ideas people have for revival are gimmicks that at best might work short term.
I have no solutions. I don't think anyone does.
