The joke originally was to make viewers laugh through awkwardness and to make us uncomfortable. This was a reference to The Lord of the Rings, with all the awkward gay scenes of hobbits talking about how much they loved each other, and men dying on the arms of their handsome king, that sort of shit.
The Nature episode just wanted to copy that joke. The Meep/Charlie thing was an honest joke, and a cool reference. The Nature episode sucked for many reasons, one of them being that it started taking jokes that worked and trying to insert them just because.
I am hopeful that this won't become the trend. If it does, then the show is over.

People wouldn't be seething this much about Allan if the episode was better executed. Like make the main plot and the B plot correlate at the end in a more engaging way, make the Allan display of faggotry be worth of the viewer's time. It was as easy as making the laptop killing Mother Nature, and bam, B plot now has a reason to be.

I enjoy the show, maybe half the episodes, but it really does bother me how it feels like Zach and Michael are struggling to figure out how to actually write a TV show. All of this would be really endearing as shorts on the internet, but on an 11 minute TV show format it feels like they don't even know their own cast nor how to actually focus on them or utilize them. Season 1 barely even used Allan outside of the pilot, people didn't even remember his name. By season 3 it just now feels like they're starting to try to focus on everyone.

I think the bar is just incredibly low for audiences because of Bojack Horseman and Pickle Rick. This show was good in its first season but they couldn't last more than 20 episodes before it turned to shit
