Didn't one of the spin-off stories confirm he was telling the truth about being influenced and didn't hallucinate that crap.

Did this come out before or after American Psycho
It's basically the same plot

American psycho was satirical and was still having Bateman being red pilled zoomies idolizing the character. Nny was always edgy absurdist humor.

Is this even remotely worth reading for me, a 36 year old man, who only knows about this because of the weird kid who sat next to me in seventh grade science class who mostly just made dead baby jokes and shoved dry erase markers up his nose and I guess also I remember Invader Zim but I was more of a "Sheep in the Big City" kind of adolescent dweeb

I mean the plot, not style.
Protagonist keeps murdering people but faces no repercussions due to either supernatural fuckery or psychotic delusions
Anonymous No.151268485 [Report]
If memory serves he was chosen by the universe to be a sink for all of it's evil or something like that.

Jhonen summed it up pretty well.
>The first issue is as close to an introduction to NNY as I wanted to get. There isn't any real insight as to just where this messed up guy is coming from, how he got here, and why he's so spotty in the head, and I like it that way. Too often insane people have these hideously contrived origins having to due with having a traumatic childhood, or people treated them badly so now they must get revenge. I've never given much thought to Johnny's past, and I find the blurriness of it all much more appealing then making him go nuts over being pantsed in school once. "YAAARGH!!! I have been pantsed!!! I kill like the damned now!!!" That's just not done.

>>151268182
Satan explained it in pic related. Nny was fucked up long before he became a Waste Lock, and how he ended up becoming one was a fuck up on some higher up’s end.

Honestly, I do like how Jhonen never gave him a backstory. Makes him more mysterious.

>no repercussions due to either supernatural fuckery or psychotic delusions
Bateman killed no one because they were all delusions to begin with. He was going through psychosis the entire movie. He notebook full of sketches were his subconscious outlet of all his violent delusions. This was also after they closed all the asylums and mental health research was put on the back burner in American society. You cannot be successful in a capitalistic world and have morality and ethics. Bateman is literally mentally ill and he was always aware of it.

Another similarity is that both Brett and Jhonen absolutely hate the fans of the characters, most likely hate their characters as well but don't regret creating them as both stories are still making them bank

Wasn't there a monster in his basement or something and he had to cover it in blood to prevent it from escaping?
I read this all at once more than 10 years ago, I couldn't tell you anything else about the series.

if people idolized Nny unironically like how fujos(awful women) lust after psychopaths in reality
I totally agree with the on that as Nny is not to be idolized
that does not make the comcis any less entertaining as violent fun

Johnny The Homicidal Maniac is a comic for comic artists. Its reputation as angsty, childish horseshit comes from the demographics it was skewering (normalfags, pedos, black activists, and other flavors of muggles) trying to ruin its success on purpose. People draw connections between JTHM and Mindless Self Indulgence (e.g. “thing that mall-goths like that is made by people who hate them”), but, honestly, I think Jhonen probably would have slaughtered Mindless Self Indulgence with a chainsaw if he got the chance and they stopped paying.

>Bateman killed no one
He did. Bret Easton Ellis has pretty much stated that all his kills are real

>For the film adaptation, director Mary Harron and the screenwriter decided early to make it clear that the murders were really happening, as they disliked “it was all a dream” endings. Bret Easton Ellis has acknowledged the film’s take but has also reiterated that the book’s unadaptable nature lies in its explanation of consciousness, a sensibility that is difficult to convey on screen

It did not seem like it did as no one believe you can explode a cop car with a single shot from your pistol. He even looked at his gun with disbelief and went along with it. Also the entire freak out scene of him running around downtown with no one in sight by potential victims, and cop cars made it clear it was not reality. The conspiracy that people were covering up his murders for some reason in that apartment that was just happened to be renovated. Yeah, the realtor was worried he was a nut job, and treated him as such.

Bateman's secretary going through his desk looking through his planner where you can progressively see him becoming more unhinged as the months went by. Showing he was going through psychotic nervous breakdown due to the busy aggressive and shallow nature of his lifestyle he keeps up. So I assume Mary Harron made that statement in order to cover the fact that people were not clever enough to figure that out in the movie.

Less ‘influenced’ and more had his drive to create drained.
Of what little we DO know about Johnny, he was an artist at one point, a homicidal artist probably, but an artist nonetheless.
Then he exams a Waste Lock, and all his artistic passion devolved into Happy Noodle Boy.
