because the little bulb thingy that the pilot light heats up to indicate the pilot light is working is defective, or dirty. also the pilot light may be clogged with soot and it's not getting a hot enough flame.

Hold it longer until the orange flame clears up. You still have air in the line from having it opened up... I've had to do it several times and hold it longer until it finally stays properly lit.

Also just tried cleaning on/around the air filter and that didn't do anything

He read your post, you didn't read his. Typically a pilot light heats up a thermocouple which tells the system to keep the gas valve open so you don't have to hold down the button. Sometimes you gotta clean/lightly sand the thermocouple to make it work again.

yes I did. had to relight pilot lights all the time because of the problem. most pilot lights go out because enough air gets blown over a pilot light to cool off the bulb. modern gas heaters are a pain to get to since they basically seal up the burner chamber.

Did you verify the wires on the flame sensor are not flipped?
