I think you have it reversed. I was saying milsurp looks weird on dudes who are in, but better on guys who aren’t serving. It feels less tryhardy, like they aren’t making work their personality. Stolen valor really hasn’t felt like much of an argument in my eyes, it’s pretty obvious if someone’s wearing pieces of military clothes for fashion or is wearing an entire uniform with tabs and ribbons to get seen in them

I should also specify, I think a lot of it comes from a lot of guys in the military being unfashionable. Most of them joined right out of highschool so never learned how to dress, and the general attitude is don’t have more than you need because you’re probably gonna have to pack it up and move before you move. Combine that with the fact that the PX and a guaranteed surplus store right off post are the stables at military bases, and most new boots end up assembling their wardrobe from skinny jeans, grunt style t shirts, and either a milsurp bomber jacket or leather jacket and aviators if they just watched top gun. If you live near a military town, you’ll see this in action. Most service members don’t even get other shoes, just wear their field boots around. So it might just be that most of the army can’t dress aside from the barracks bunnies and the odd gay guy here and there, but still I just don’t cringe as hard when I see someone who’s obviously not in wear milsurp. Feels like it’s getting turned into a part of their identity, rather than being in and the army infecting even more of your personal life

just got these brand new for $15 + shipping, pairing with some multicolor laces from doc martens $3 + shipping

Opinions on my fit? Just threw it together to fish, I try to use /out/ activity as an excuse to wear more surplus stuff, too embarrassed to wear it around normally. Pants are Italian and boots are Spanish.

I feel the same way. The only reason I got into it is because my familiy is a marine one and my father is into collecting all this stuff. I don't know what got everyone else into it, but a lot of surplus is really good stuff. If you’re in America, that surplus is still around at an affordable price. Even at thrift stores occasionally. You could even go with a reproduction from stores like Hessen Antique but in my experience it will never feel as good as the real thing. Factor in that it’s brand new straight off from the container ship and it will feel like you are just playing dress up.
