Generally, smooth leather docs are leather with a plastic coating/shell on top that make them more rigid and shiny and completely hides any grain of the leather. They have a bunch of different types of soft leathers which are typically leathers that don’t have the plastic coating. They usually have less structure and on some of them you can see the actual grain of the leather. The softer leather docs look better and feel higher quality imo. Smooth docs are a pain in the ASS to break in and make tolerable and look like plastic toy boots imo but I still like them sometimes.

Even bought a pair of steel cap 90s Docs last year, one year later the back is ripped and the toe crease has a hole, no hole in toe box though, my toes aren't strong enough to penetrate steel.
Thinking about copping a pair of Gripfast 10 eye, hopefully they will be the one which will last me

they were an british workwear brand way back in the day. i don't know how it is now, but british police issued shoes were doc martens for a long time, that kind of shit. because they were workwear the british punk movement wore them as well, and famously the skinhead nazi punks adopted them as part of their uniform. from the punk movement they spread into the general alt music world through the 80s and 90s.

i had an english made pair back in the 90s as a teenager. ended up giving them to my sister because they got too small. between the two of us they lasted about 8 years of usage and that included about three years of me wearing them nearly every day. so they used to be worth the price. i doubt that's the case these days.
