What are the books called? Are they all tokyo/japan based? I like the asian style tatami and futon sitting down on the floor vibe. Asians know how to make small spaces comfy and kino. Not sure if most chick's dig it unless they're weebs but idc i just broke off a 3 year relationship I just want to get laid desu.
Where can I buy tatami/asian furniture that's not on Amazon or overpriced?

Those images come from a book called Tokyo Style by Kyoichi Tsuzuki. He's a Japanese art critic and photographer who has done dozens of books, but is best known(at least in the West) for his books that capture the idiosyncrasies of Japanese consumerism (Tokyo Style, Happy Victims, etc.). There are at least four books I am aware of that he has done that showcase 'real' japanese living spaces, and take down the stereotype of Japanese homes being 'ultra minimal zen spaces with rock gardens and shit'.
The books all feature Japan, and are centered around Tokyo, but later books/editions of the series also include Osaka and Kyoto. (He might have also ventured into some of the smaller cities and suburbs, but I would have to double-check.)
If you don't want to move to Japan, there are many cities in North America where you can easily rent a shitty small studio or one bedroom and then just install a tatami mat and sit on the floor. I had a buddy in San Francisco turn his apartment into a makeshift pottery studio, had some tatami mats and a fucking noguchi table(because of course). However, trying to find a place with similar windows/heating/ walls may be challenging. Then again, I have seen people convert their studios into 'japanese-style' ones where I live, but for a rental that seems a bit...overkill.
For furnishing the place, I would find a North American dealer for Tendo Mokko, or import yourself(very slow process)
You can buy certain items Tendo Mokko produces, like the Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi, from companies like Vitra, but the difference in price between Vitra's butterfly stool and Tendo Mokko's is so large that it's worth it to just ship one from Japan if you know how to avoid duties.
If you are destitute, you can get by thrifting stuff, especially if you live in a wealthy city with a large asian diaspora. Larping as a musician is a very important part of being a young man, a formative experience; I support your quest.

If I were you, I would figure out a way to update the apartment that complements the original design rather than trying to restore it to its original, period-correct state. The idea of living in a time capsule strikes me as kitsch and tacky. Then again, it's your apartment, so do whatever you want with it lol!

Everything is institutionalized now. All work is done by institutions, all freelancers are trained by institutions. Everything is a product. Thereโ€™s no soul in anything done or made professionally. It all depends on systems and cookie cutter planning and preferences like a McDonaldโ€™s. This is the result of approaching doing anything as less art and more science, total standardization, total reproducibility.

>le refinement culture thesis
I mean, yeah sure, scientific exactitude is a nice high-level explanation, but I guess I was looking for more specifics behind the origins and development of the style because it has developed in parallel(but obviously not identically) to similar things happening in art and design, such as graphic designers foregoing visual communication in favour of creating derivative or trendy work that seems more concept-based than practical, and the emergence of artwork that are designed to photograph and video well in conjunction with styles/techniques that blend 2D/3D space well, which have returned like airbrushing.

Who could have ever seen this coming

Yes, many 'icons of design'(including most of the stuff in the original image) are cheap junk for the middle class. This does not negate their influence or ability to inspire(i think you probably be inspired and create some interesting from almost any source), but I also don't have to accept and praise this tasteless, tacky, middle-brow, cookie-cutter interior design style plauging Instagram and Pinterest just because it's full of objects you fetishize because a Taschen book told you were good. The modal person who buys this shit is a gaey urbane hipster coping with the fact they'll never own a home, don't have any taste, and don't have a personality so they buy junk and throw it all together because it aproximates some kind of conspicuous ideal of being cultured that they saw online. And unless you are some kind of retarded flyover neet you know exactly the kind of people I'm talking about. Lara Lynn I imagine, is an exception that proves the rule.

I think they are more focused on furniture sourcing/materials, no? You could just have a conversation or five with them about what you like, and it's not like you can't make the place lived in after they set it up. At this point you may as well criticize him for not building the whole damn house.

Interior designers, as the name suggests, design interiors. Depending on the scope of the project, this could range from sourcing art and furniture for a client, (although this is not usually why you would hire one outside of very niche use cases) to liaising with developers, architects, engineers, millworkers, various assorted tradesmen, 3D artists, fabricators, organizing and dealing with logistics, vendors, sales agents etc to make sure shit gets to the client site on time, on budget and without being destroyed.
You are correct, it generally starts with some kind of consultation, which is a conversation about the client's needs and the budget, and so on.
That said, if you have a cottage that you're going to put, say 150k in renovations into, why would you hire an interior designer? Places like Muji and Ikea have design consultation services these days, and so does any half decent furniture showroom you're liable to stumble into on your local high street. That, plus a good contractor, will be more than enough for 99% of residential projects.

Is this the place I go to seek help with interior design for my 200 sq. ft. apartment? I have been hyperfixated on redesigning this space for months and it's still awful.

Does a couch go in front of the entranceway or across from it? Does a bed need to have clearance in front of it? And how does one pull off the fancy "shelf as room partition" meme? And, finally, can expensive statement pieces (aka not KALLAX) pull an otherwise dismal room together?

yes it is
2 questions though.
1.Why are you so insistent on having a couch in there? 200 sqft is really limiting. I would probably have gone for a futon or pullout to combine sitting/sleeping area. I mean, you're probably not doing entertaining in here.
2. where the fuck is your kitchen/kichenette

> And how does one pull off the fancy "shelf as room partition" meme?
A shelf as room partition here would probably go at the foot of your bed, to create some semblance of your bed being it's own space. Go look up interiors from popeye and other Japanese magazines because those dudes live in shoeboxes and manage to make it look decent. A minitrend in asian apartments (JP,CN,KR) are to use these brackets(pic related) for lumber and do like DIY shelving/dividers for their rentals too because it's a cheap way to break up the space without damaging it

>can expensive statement pieces (aka not KALLAX) pull an otherwise dismal room together?
no.
pieces that work together are the only thing that will ever 'pull a room together' you can't just throw random shit together and hope for the best.
Also, clarify what you mean by 'expensive' because there is a world of difference between ikea and a rare one-off piece that costs like 120k on 1stdibs or at auction

Thank you for the advice. I am okay with getting rid of the sofa, but there is a TV across from it (not pictured) and I don't know how to have a viewing area. There is the possibility of having the bed (or futon) under the window and the TV across from it, but having your bed under a window isn't "feng shui" and is supposed to feel wrong. Floating the TV is also wrong. There is no one being entertained but myself.

The footboard idea sounds like a good idea.

(The kitchen is a tiny room that is out of view here)

A lounge chair will have a much smaller footprint than the couch if you want something to watch TV in. Hell if you want to get really clever and thrifty you can get a folding chair to pack away when not in use, or just use your desk chair. I use my computer desk as a dining table because I don't have space for a dining table. Which is not ideal, but Its a decent compromise for combined living/working space

Ikea or DIY.
Ikea's Boaxel system is very often recommended as an alternative that approximates the style and silhouette of the 606 system. I also had an architect friend who used a Home Depot garage wall mount system and MDF to make his own minamlish modular shelving system for like 500 bucks. Those are basically your two main options if you're poor and want something that looks as similar as possible.
If you are slightly more friction-averse, the String modular shelving system and Rakks aluminum system often come up in the conversation of wall mounted modular shelving systems. They always struck me as a cope though. If you're going to buy furniture, either buy the best thing you possibly can, which will hold its value, or just buy something cheap. I've never been a fan of this mid-tier approximation type of consumption.
>>18453989
If someone asked about 'cheap alternatives' to SLP Wyatts you wouldn't automatically assume they want to go on taobao and buy a dupe you sperg. We're talking about a minimalist, modular wall-mounted shelving system here, not some impossible-to-approximate avant-garde design.

As for the String system, it's a good suggestion. Real Swedish classic. You can still find old wall systems/shelves from the 60s and 70s in good shape on auction sites. (Not quite what I'm after though)

The dream would be to combine it with a tatami-esque room, but I'm not quite sure how that would pan out just yet. Intuitively, I'm on the fence on whether tatami + visual clutter (induced by open cabinets) would work.

i always assumed the lounge chair in hotel room is a place to sit and put your shoes on before you go out in lieu of a bench or proper sitting area one might have in their home. I've never been in a hotel room that has foyer so.

and yes, the company I used to work for used to send that photographer and various VIP clients to our vendor's HQ for an immersive design themed vacation, they'd visit ateliers and a series of interesting design tourism spots. Prague was one of the nicer ones but we sent them to places like Bern, Vienna, Munich, Copenhagen, Brussels etc. It was always funny seeing these gorgeous homes end up captured in Boomers' selfies. Really weird juxtaposition of media where you have this amazing home in this terribly lit, terribly composed photo with a beauty filter on it and so on. That sort of stuff shakes you of whatever pretence or reverence you have for this stuff and makes you realize, as beautiful as it is, it's just a home, or a building, it's just 'stuff'.
>>18454340
The main pros of the Vitsoe I see are 1. it's le icon of design and your cool design friends will jerk you off endlessly for it 2. it is of sufficient quality that you can take it with you wherever you go and not worry about it breaking down(not true of our ikea examples in this thread). 3. You can expand it to whatever size you need, and expand it over the lifetime of the product, which is not always possible as many companies go bankrupt, discontinue items, and so on. 4. Vitsoe has very good customer support and will help you install basically anywhere in the world, which when you're some upper middle class fuck off digital nomad outfitting your vietnamese beachhouse manor is a very nice service offering.

I'm gonna fill your house to the brim with Noguchi. Your gonna come home to a new stack of Noguchi tables every day. Your gonna leave to go to the bathroom and come back to a fresh set of cheap knockoff Noguchi tables lining every inch of the floor. One day your going to wake up and wish you never ever said a bad word about Noguchi tables, but it will be too late, because you'll be sleeping on a Noguchi table.

There's currently too much emphasis on "secondary" furniture in a room that's already trying to do 3 things at once (Living room/Workspace/Bedroom). It's too cramped.

>Get a *much* smaller bedside table
>Combine the workspace shelf with the living room shelf (perhaps hang additional shelves above your work desk?
>Get a small, preferably round kitchen table that you can actually walk past
>You now have space in the living area for 2 decently-sized chairs, so you can get rid of the bulky 2-person sofa

You now also have enough space to partition the room in any way you like. Adding a partitioning shelf at the end of the bed like the other anon mentioned makes a lot of sense, but make sure you let enough light get to your living room.

i think feng shui might unironically help you out here
you shouldn't have your back to a door when sitting (gusts of wind, people coming in)
desks should face a window or be positioned to face guests (formal office)
beds should be away from entrances (wind or foot traffic)
it's kind of hocus pocus but it feels right, just read some blogs and see if it makes any sense

Stainless steel sinks on their own are perfectly fine, stainless steel kitchens were and still are very popular, but they're heading off-trend in interiors. I think people are finally sick of the severe, brushed metal furniture stuff that every European industrial design graduate has been pushing for the last 5+ years.

I intended on staying agnostic on the issue, because I sort of get where your coming from.
>If you're old and poor you have way bigger problems than trying to figure out how to decorate your apartment
It seems like the obvious conclusion. But frankly, I don't think it's really your place to tell some old fag what should matter to him at this stage of his life. That's not what these threads are for, and it's ultimately his choice to do whatever he wants with his time and money.
>hallucinate a bunch of insane shit
You sound so annoyed that he doesn't just submit to your logic. That's how I know you aren't saying it for the right reasons. It's not about having the right priorities, it's about listening to you even though you are blatantly and needlessly twisting the knife about his poor decision making.
>sucks for you guys lol
You actually think it's funny that he is in this shitty position and you take glee in your perception that you have it better. You've got a crab in a bucket mentality, all while you critique consumerism like some haughty hipster that rolls their own cigarettes. Your a joke. You need to flex on others constantly to feel secure in your choices cause you're just a sadist hiding behind mostly sound logic. Your bully pulpit attitude is good for nobody and you are your own worst enemy.

In any case I was trying to communicate it's limitedness and rarity/obscurity because it's an interesting thing to note about the design, and the other guy(maybe you?) wasn't familiar with it(why would they be if it's this obscure 1/20 chair no one has ever heard of right?)

It's ALL me, baby. Honestly surprised I even made it in the running. It's quite an achievement. How'd I manage it? Just a bit of persistent disagreement, that's all.
I know, I thought it'd be harder. We all know 4chan's an extreme place. But the craziest thing you can do is hold people to any kind of standard. "fiction and falsehood" and all that.
I'll keep chilling in these threads collecting a veritable mountain of accusations and labels from these goons, without a single credible refutation among them. When they tell me I'm a fool to engage, they give me a tacit admission of dishonesty that I find worth the trouble. Call me a schizo fag while you jerk each other off over shadowboxing victories and burning strawmen, it brings me a great deal of satisfaction.

You're probably just concern trolling, but sure, I'll bite. Last thread NPD anon literally spent the whole thing playing dumb and trolling to avoid admitting the fact that his "critique" of my post was just some pithy bullshit he said to stroke his own ego. ITT? It's no longer just about me.
>>18461356
NPD anon took it upon himself to try and push oldfag anon out of designing his apartment. That's not what these threads are for, is it? Is this the "DON'T DO INTERIOR DESIGN" thread? Seems like he thinks oldfag anon should just an hero or something because he's old and poor. I resent this American Psycho grindset mindset cause it's entirely born out of compensation. It's an eminence front. It's a put on. It's not about a specific word, but the megalomaniacal attitude he displays in almost every post. I mean FFS the dude literally called himself the Napoleon of /fa/.

How fucking admirable.
You only see me as ODD because I'm reacting to someone with obvious NPD negatively. Without anyone calling him out you'd all be paying him to give you lessons as a part of a fucking pyramid scheme by now, so you can eat shit. IGDQD

>Anti-psychiatry scholars have extensively criticized this diagnosis through a Foucauldian framework, characterizing it as a tool of the psy apparatus which pathologizes resistance to injustice. Oppositional defiant disorder has been compared to drapetomania, a now-obsolete disorder proposed by Samuel A. Cartwright which characterized slaves in the Antebellum South who repeatedly tried to escape as being mentally ill.
What is sluggish schizophrenia?
>Sluggish schizophrenia as a diagnostic category was created to facilitate the stifling of dissidents and was a root of self-deception among psychiatrists to placate their consciences when the doctors acted as a tool of oppression in the name of a political system. Along with paranoia, sluggish schizophrenia was the diagnosis most frequently used for the psychiatric incarceration of dissenters. Darrel Regier of the National Institute of Mental Health, one of the U.S. experts who visited Soviet psychiatric hospitals in 1989, testified that a "substantial number" of political dissenters had been recognized as mentally sick on the basis of such symptoms as "anti-Soviet thoughts" or "delusions of reformism".

Idk probably make a big single file line for each of you to pay Napoleon Anon a million bucks each for the privilege of slobbing his knob. Probably sit there taking insults about how you aren't slobbing good enough cause you don't read the right obscure french sex blogs or some pretentious shit like that. You'd experience less obvious cognitive dissonance. Sorry not sorry. Coulda been anyone, but had to be me.

You've actually never posted a thing addressing the substance of any of our disagreements. Every argument you make is just
>brag about/exaggerate your own perceived positive qualities.
>massively exaggerate your enemies perceived negative qualities.
>concern troll/minimize your role in the argument.
Our little back and forth may have started a while ago, but it only accounts for a few hours actually reading/posting in these threads. It's been entertaining, so why not. I enjoy the conflict. Besides, when exactly did you stop responding? You can't argue in good faith. You're just here to maintain your image. Fitting for a /fa/ggot. Quite effay.
>be so mad you confuse me with at least 4 different anons
You've confused me with other anons a few times. All it really proves is that you've used 4chan longer than I have, which is nothing to brag about. It doesn't matter. The idea that getting miffed in an argument where your getting trolled and dogpiled on constantly is somehow a sign that you're wrong is not only coward logic, it's also obviously hypocritical. You can only really assume just how emotionally invested someone actually is, so either your taking them seriously or your exaggerating for the sake of dismissing them.
>seethe over a sarcastic comment
Minimization. Boiling down everything you've posted down to the smallest possible contribution. If I cited every douchey post you've made you'd just say "umadbro?".
One minute you're a master troll getting a rise out of me on purpose and the next you're an innocent wittle lamb that barely even said anything to incite criticism. Hilarious, cartoonishly narcissistic, Tweety-bird level behavior. It's been fun.

Just after image limit, no real point without images plus real-life responsibilities. But it was fridayso I thought I'd drop in and see what happened.

ah yes my image as an anonymous shitposter
>You've confused me with other anons a few times.
No, i haven't? what lol?
>Minimization. Boiling down everything you've posted down to the smallest possible contribution.....
Well you can't point to any douchey posts of mine because again you're confusing me with like four different people(who as others have pointed out you're not even disagreeing with) and more importantly if you look where the napoleon comment is made, it follows this one
>>18457686
I, of course, think the post is funny, so I make a sarcastic remark that because I'm (pretty much) the only 'Do-er' in the thread, I'm just like Napoleon. We are on a dying image board, of course, and the stakes are nonexistent, so this is meant humously. I really don't know how you could read it any other way.
Hilarity ensues here and here where you take it as evidence of my 'narcissism' and attack a poor hapless anon lmfao.

There no contradiction there in general, and as I've told you before, feel free to shit up the threads, post however you like. Every general, every groupchat, discord, Skype group, what have you, needs its punching bag, lolcow, etc. If you want to post pictures of dicks or bags of shit or whatever go ahead, the rest of the thread as youv'e realized may respond in kind.
More importantly, I'm not sure we've engaged in this thread, unless you were the retard at the start of the thread who didn't understand what I and the another anon were saying about the design shop aesthetic that's all over social media these days.

>No, i haven't? what lol?
How can anyone tell? Everyone on this god forsaken board dresses/acts/types the same anyway. 4chan is filled with conformity, but this board in particular is rife with it. This whole thread has barely any actual design meta discussion of substance, and it's crowded to the brim with the same magazine clipout styles over and over again. Nothing out of the box or interesting, because having a personality would be so cringe, or so consumerist, or so fucking GAAAAY. If these threads are trolled to oblivion or nuked to high heaven, nothing of value would be lost.
>I'm not sure we've engaged in this thread
Does anybody even know who they are responding to? Oh, wait, were you Paul Allen? Does anybody even know what Paul Allen looked like? Oh, he looked like this other guy, who looks like this other guy, who's associates with this other guy who dressed and acted a lot like the guy who rented Paul Allen's apartment before him. ...What? I enjoy a little heated debate, but you're incentivized left and right to anonymize yourself. All that can be accomplished in being obvious is to be held to a different standard than all the randos shitting up the thread or trolling for it's own sake. All the sudden it doesn't matter that 4chan doesn't have a heckin updoot downdoot system, because you'll just be forcefully shoved through the humiliation ritual mold until you conform to the retarded hivemind or become a lolcow. Democracy is bullshit and 4chan's style of free speech is it's discussion equivalent. When everybody is free to say what they want, nobody is. See you next week.

>>18464238
I didn't say it spoke well of my character. Some men get into bar fights to vent their thinly veiled homoerotic sadomasochistic tendencies. I get into impotent internet arguments. We should all know better than to use this shithole of a website for anything real. We are all pigs in shit and the pain is absolutely part of the fun. I've gotta admit, though, I didn't realize the depths of my racism until the dreaded "you're brown" accusation. I might not have perfect grammar, but I like apple pie and cheap coffee and my nipples are as pink as a freshly picked peach. Faggot.
