it's purpose is to be a multi-purpose bit of cloth.
mainly as a rag to wipe the muck off your hands or the sweat from your brow.

I tie them around my neck to avoid sunburn as I work outside for 12+ hours a day. Don't get cheap shitty ones though. You can buy super nice vintage ones from the 1920's to the 1950's for like $30 a pop on ebay.

I always have one in my back pocket. If it's clean you can blow your nose or wipe food off your face with it. Once it's dirty you can use it as a general purpose rag.
