These very often are horrendous quality leather. The rigidity comes from a piece of cardboard being sandwiched between two pieces of bonded leather, or a single piece of bonded leather and felt.

You see it all the time even in luxury brands like LV and Montblanc, but most of their demographic don't really care about leather quality.
