For some reason if you look like a 40yo failed bodybuilder with an abnormally aged face from steroids and arms always way too flared out for the size of your lats, you can get away with a tiny fanny pack worn on your chest as a sling bag.

I use a burgundy leather messenger bag and it's one of the items other than my shoes that gets a lot of compliments from women. They also get very interested in what I carry inside. Keep in mind you need to dress the part (smart casual or business casual) so if you dress like a slob in a hoodie, pajama pants and your best Crocs with socks its not going to work.
