anon is only sort of right that its a high rise pants thing.
its about the entire geometry of the upper block. and high rise pants just happen to tend to have better upper block geometry more of the time. you still need the upper to be loose around your hip area and the material to be thick. i would start by trying some pleated pants that are actually cut well (most are not).
once you find a pair of pants or two where the upper block shape works for you, just study the shape of everything above the thigh entry -- you can just look at pics of stuff and tell if its gonna work or not.
