What should I look for in tank tops? I can't figure out what makes some of them look so bad compared to other ones

By the way, get muscle shirts with looser arm holes. Tank tops look gay and stringers look even gayer. You basically just want a t shirt with the sleeves removed.

To attempt to answer your question it depends on what image you're trying to get across with your overall outfit. If you're trying to look as put together and tasteful as possible then wear neutral tone ribbed tank tops as layering pieces to a button down shirt and then either unbutton the shirt or take it off as the situation demands.
If you're trying to "chud out" then it doesn't really matter what kind of tank top you'll wear. That said either plain cotton tank tops will work or t-shirts with the sleeves cut off. Stay far away from tank tops with graphics or print designs on them or shirts sold as sleeveless.
