I finally got to try these on because rei stocked them again. While they solved the zipper issue and they now have a ykk crotch, they made them too slim fit for comfortable squatting now, they have no back pockets, and the "ventalation" is just zippered holes in the sides rather than holed vents throughout. They are too hot still. The cargo pocket placement is perfect as they don't snag like side pockets always do though. Why is it impossible to find the percect cargo pants. I want to get rid of the 5.11s I wear everyday but I can't find a superior replacement.

I gave up on cargo pants a couple years ago. Tru-Spec used to have some pretty good ones, but I don't think they make them anymore.

modern hiking pants are skin tight and full of elastine because they're designed to not snag on things, and to cut down on costs having to tailor things like articulated legs, for mass production.
if you don't want that just buy vintage ones from the 80s, 90s or 2000's.

Kuhls are highly recced but they're all plasticy like that. I like the front pocket orientation because side pockets always catch and snag.

you don't want ripstop nylon?
are you like, intending to use these pants as outdoors gear or more just as lifestyle/casual pants?
if you are intending to use them as hiking pants and you don't like the hand feel of synthetics i would highly rec 50 nylon/50 cotton blend stuff. if you've ever handled old military fatigues like bdu's that's what most countries were using for a pretty long period of time. it basically looks and feels like cotton but you get a lot of the technical benefits like drying times and strength from the nylon.
or if you're just wearing them casually i can steer you in the direction of some 100% cotton recs if you want.

I want them to be daily and don't want sparks from an angle grinder to burn holes in them. So I was looking at the viddas because they're thicker and not 100% plastic but I don't want hot balls as well. Drying time doesn't matter to me. I wear these 5.11s right now but I don't like how shitty the sewing is (multiple asymetries), I don't like the side pocket position as they snag on things, and I don't like the material as it tears easily. The high waistline and amount of pockets is excellet as is the depth of pockets. The mobility is also good and you can put kneepads in them. The back pockets fit 30rd magazines they are so huge. If 5.11s quality control and material were better they would be good enough. But the material is ugly and the tolerances in stitching are bad. They're also patchy looking with multiple visible stitchlines that could be hidden.

gotcha just trying to figure out your use case so i can shoot off useful recs. what makes you want a blend material if you're shooting sparks all day? i would go for some 100% cotton fire retardant double front canvas pants in a decent weight personally. if the breathability is a problem you could opt for non fr, single fronts or denim instead.
hm protection do you need? just grinding/sparks or are you welding shit and using torches a lot too?
and mind illustrating where the ideal pocket would sit?

Best cargoes i have are Rokker motorcycle pants. Bought them bcs of the protection level (as good as leather, but doesn't look as retarded at work), and found that they're even more comfy than my BDUs, and much better than any others I tried.
Proper nyco BDUs (milsurp or Rothco) are a lose second for me, and only a tenth of the price.

Not often. Just personal projects in the garage. I want to get down to 3 or 3 pairs of pants and just one one cargo, one jean, one wool slacks. The cargo pants should be able to wear to camp or hunt or fish or do framing for a shed as well as plain enough to wear into a more industrial type office with a shirt tucked in boomer style. It should be brown or khaki and able to be worn with a twill or chambray or denim shirt or a polo or a henely. Waterproofing can be sprayed on. I like the vidda pros cargo pocket orientation but am disappointed by the front pockets and complete lack of back pockets. I like high rise. Again these would be fine and I would be okay with the cargo pocket position if they were higher quality in both material and construction.

The special forces wore levis 501s because the normal fatigues sucked so hard.

Functionally, Fjallraven and 5.11 are the best.
