Why does everyone dress like a toddler these days? Just look at this picture at Jeremey Clarkson's old english pub not a single polo or button shirt or trousers or boots except for a couple of fossils wearing sandals. Not even a nice coat. Just t-shirts and sneakers. How did it get this bad?

It's a symptom of cultural relativism, capitalism and liberalism imo. People want convenience so they spend more time on earning money for the system, quantifiably competing with one another versus subjectively upholding cultural norms of aesthetics. On a structural level, commercialism pushes very cheaply made, polyester basics adorned in logos: higher margins of return and investment is made in brand equity rather than on the garment designs or quality. So a number of factors really that are stuck in a feedback loop with one another on both individual and systemic layers.

It's a result of erosion of your national culture and heritage. You can see the difference in a more Conservative and Christian country such as in Wien, Austria. People dress and act better there.

Did peasants in the middle ages dress nice? No. They dressed functional.
From march to october i wear shorts, and half the time i wear sandals. Sue me.

I've been a middle class european my whole life, not ONCE in my life i've needed to wear a suit. I have one blazer left, but no shirts left (i wore them so little that the fit got out of fashion, too tight, i mostly wore them at funerals and weddings).
I do have a bunch of knitted polos tho, because they are both semi formal and comfy (and don't need to get ironed).
Women stopping doing house chores and ironing clothes also plays a big part in this.

Back when you had housewives, you basically had a free valet ironing your clothes and shit.
Now, (lazy entitled tattooed dined wined dicked) women don't iron clothes because "they are not slaves", but men still fix the car, fix the sink, the flush tank and so on...

And functionality and elegance are not mutually exclusive. Medieval peasants always dressing in drab earth tone rags is a Hollywood propaganda. They dressed well and wore far more colors than the modern NPC goy cattle.

even if you were dressing inconveniently for cultural aesthetics you would be shelling money into fast fashion. acting like one style adheres more to capitalism than another is like saying i don't like drinking water, i prefer to suckle from an icecube. at the end of the day people should dress whatever makes them the most happiest because unless you are sewing your own shit, you're feeding into the capitalistic hellscape regardless

This is backwards- consumer culture is what compels productivity, it doesn't exist at the expense of it. People work so that they can increase consumption. Moreover, commercialism does not structrually want to sell people cheaper products. Cheaper products have lower profit margins. Rather, capitalism wants to sell people ever more expensive and complex products with more opportunities to extract value. You can see this process occur with cars, GPUs, etc. We could make cheaper cars, but we don't because we can sell people more expensive cars with higher margins, and people want cars with more features.

During the industrial revolution, this process occured for clothing, since it was one of the first sectors to industrialize. That's why people wore such expensive clothing; it was one of the only consumer sectors that could capture the surplus value from workers. People spent 14% of their income on clothing vs 4% today. Other products are more compelling to consume.

Since less money is spent on clothing, it becomes a less profitable sector. At the same time, labor costs only get higher, and clothing requres a lot of human labor. So this is a cycle of continually lowering revenue and consumers that have continually lower standards as they save on clothing and spend on products they care more about.

>Since less money is spent on clothing, it becomes a less profitable sector.
And that's a good thing. And you spend money on clothing less often, not less. People in the past spent far more money on clothes (adjusted to inflation) than they do today, because they bought high quality clothes less often, unlike the cheap shit quality slop they sell these days. Clothes weren't something people consooomed until recently. Even until like the 90's, people used to buy clothes only when their old clothes were completely falling apart and unwearable, after years and even over a decade of continuous use. They also bought them only during special occasions, like your birthday, for Christmas, for an event like someone's wedding, your own anniversary, etc.

>This is backwards- consumer culture is what compels productivity, it doesn't exist at the expense of it.
Very naïve. You seemingly have no idea how manipulated the masses are by invasive corporate marketing efforts layered over decades.
This is dead wrong, you must be under 18. There are FAR more people at scale who can afford a $50 Zara denim jacket than who can afford a $500 APC denim jacket, let alone a $5,000 LV denim jacket. And guess what? they are ALL for sale at all price points. Your car argument seems to imply that you are so young that you don't even own a car or realize that with inflation, cars have never been cheaper than before. And surprise: most new cars on the road are cheap plastic economy cars.
>Since less money is spent on clothing, it becomes a less profitable sector. At the same time, labor costs only get higher, and clothing requres a lot of human labor. So this is a cycle of continually lowering revenue and consumers that have continually lower standards as they save on clothing and spend on products they care more about.
You might want to do a little research there. Almost all street level retail is clothing or food and beverage now.

I've not seen someone so confidently put so much effort into being so fundamentally wrong on every point, right down to your basic assumptions and ignorance of how much things cost...

No, we genuinely do spend less money on clothing. The figures I quoted are real. And this isn't social progress. We just culturally moved from spending on clothing that we don't need to going into debt to drive an $80k truck that we don't need. Clothing being expensive doesn't change its nature as a consumer product; we can consume products that are extremely expensive.

S/S button down shirts are superior to polos, but camp collars frame the face better than a normal shirt collar here. Since these aren't being worn with layers the collar has to do more heavy lifting. It's surprising that these haven't been mentioned in the thread yet- there are way more casual summer shirt styles than polo/tshirt.

What's your point? Advertising compels people to spend more, which increases productivity. If the masses weren't manipulated to spend more, they could spend less time working.
>There are FAR more people at scale who can afford a $50 Zara denim jacket
Optimal value capture is not a simple function of producing the cheapest products possible. The luxury car market has doubled in size since the pandemic.

I meant we should spend more money on good quality clothes and buy them less often, so that we don't keep pointlessly consooming clothes. But yes, people do spend less money on clothes and buy more of them now. It's now quantity over quality, unlike in the past when they spent much more on far less.

Cuban collared short sleeve shirts are also a great alternative to polos and crew neck t-shirts.

I'm wondering if that's going to increase with the new situation of ultra-cheap low quality clothing encouraging bulk purchases and having to be renewed more often than ever.

You have never been in a high end retail boutique and it shows. Neither has GPT or wherever you got your information. Let me tell you, the biggest sellers at Dior et al. are of branded t-shirts. And the margins are HUGE on that stuff.

All luxury fashion markets have increased tremendously. That's just the luxury market, fast fashion has also exploded.
And none of these things have anything to do with why people dress down now more today despite spending more money.

You're not coherently responding to my claims at all- I don't think you understand my posts. The move from complex tailored clothing to simpler casual clothing lowered profit margins. Your example is irrelevant.

The offshoring of garment manufacture is also a big part of why clothing got worse. Much of expertise that existed in high cost of labor countries was destroyed. But I didn't want to go into too much detail.

She (a bitch) was not trained properly to interact with people, so when we walked her outside, she considered everybody as a threat and an enemy, she also didn't know how to interact with the space (knowing the difference between the sidewalk and the road).
Autists are the same, you are not properly socialized, you think people should think and dress like you as a projection of yourself and of your mind, you don't understand context and social cues, you don't diffrenciate you own impulses and objective facts and so on.
All the people in OP's pic are more adapted to their environment and social circle than you are (being at a pub with friends to begin with).

This one is not a "suit". It's a sports jacket, odd trousers and a button up shirt. All of which are casual wear. Suit type clothes aren't just the stuff you see on CEOs and lawyers in movies. Nobody is stopping you from wearing this and looking sharp, instead of the usual sloppy nignog hoodies and plastic puffer jackets.

> If I wanna impress, I’m gonna wear some Gucci, Louis, and Prada.
Spoken like a true thirdie. People don't give a shit about your labels if you dress like a clown, which is what most label flashers do. Even cheap no brand clothes will look good on you if you get the fit right and know how to style them. Not to mention, flashing labels and brands is like 15 years out of fashion. Did you miss the whole "quiet luxury" trend? Looking rich (i.e graceful, dignified and classy) isn't about the labels, but in the way you carry yourself.

Nobody needs to integrate into a sick and degenerated society. Fashion, like all art forms, is a way to elevate the human consciousness and experience. Dressing well is not only good for your mind, but also for other people who are going to lay their eyes on you. Don't psychologically and spiritually corrupt and ruin the minds of unsuspecting people on the streets who are already suffering enough from living in the degenerated modern society and culture.

the global surface temperature has only increased 1*c since 1970 according to the most radical climate projections and more realistically around 0.6*c because the 1*c figure involves 15 years worth of data that was proven and then admitted to be falsified by a bunch of climate scientists who were exchanging emails about how they need to make global warming look worse than it is because ushering in the marxist agenda is more important than the truth. literally their words not mine.
quit trying to push your retarded political agenda.
global warming and carbon pollution is a geniune environmental concern but it is overblown as a red herring / distraction to keep your mind off over-fishing, chemical pollution, nuclear waste disposal and other much more serious ecological concerns.
its pushed by major corporations originally to defang the far left eco-terrorist groups of the 70s-90s and to enrich themselves with carbon credit fraud schemes where they lie to the public about how the plastic shit you bought from china is "carbon neutral" while stealing money from the taxpayer and committing all sorts of fraud. some of the biggest fraud cases in american history were renewable energy schemes.

It's just another way to keep your head down. We're all equally insignificant cattle.

Men went from peacocks to pidgeons starting with the French revolution. Nothing but black coats after that. The bowtie and top hat vanish after the Great Depression. In the 60s, wearing a tie made you square. Hip-hop promotes sportswear. And now we're in the era of sitting on a beanbag in your open office wearing a t-shirt and shorts.

It all boils down to: you're not better than me, you're not fancier than me, you're not a higher authority than me. We're all equally bland and inoffensive. It's a masculinity problem. Men aren't allowed to stand out any more.

This is what ChatGPT gave me:

(1/2)

That’s a sharp observation—and one that touches on deeper cultural shifts. When people say “everyone dresses like children these days,” they’re often reacting to fashion trends emphasizing comfort, playfulness, and nostalgia over traditional adult formality. Here are a few reasons why this is happening:
1. Comfort Reigns Supreme

Post-pandemic, comfort became a top priority. Sweatpants, oversized hoodies, sneakers—once reserved for kids or lazy weekends—became everyday staples for adults too.
2. Nostalgia-Driven Fashion

Millennials and Gen Z grew up in the '90s and 2000s, and now designers are tapping into that nostalgia. Think cartoon graphics, cargo pants, jelly sandals, and playful colors. What used to be “kid stuff” is now retro-cool.
3. Blurred Age Boundaries

Youth culture heavily influences mainstream trends. The line between what's "for kids" and "for adults" has blurred. It's more acceptable now for a 35-year-old to wear a Pokémon T-shirt or carry a Hello Kitty bag.
4. Rejection of Formality

Wearing suits and “grown-up” clothes used to signal adulthood and seriousness. Today, dressing down is often seen as more authentic, creative, and even powerful in some circles (think tech CEOs in hoodies).
5. Influence of Streetwear & Pop Culture

Streetwear, once underground, is now high fashion. Brands like Supreme, Off-White, and even collaborations with cartoons or anime characters are reshaping adult wardrobes.

(2/2)

6. Economic Factors

Fast fashion promotes cheap, trendy clothes that often mimic youth styles. These items are accessible and constantly evolving, encouraging playful experimentation.

If it feels like adults are dressing like kids, it might not just be about style—it could reflect a larger cultural hesitation to embrace traditional adulthood, or simply a broader definition of what being an adult looks like today.

Would you say this trend bothers you, or just intrigues you?

People are too fat these days to wear nice clothing. A nice shirts placket will warp due to their mantits and beer belly. Can't have a nice fitting waistband so instead they opt for an elastic one to stretch around their bloat. Plus if they wore nice stuff they might spill their soda or burger sauce on them when stuffing their face for the 5th time that day.

I saw a thirty-something year old obese woman wearing Celine skinny jeans, Armani sneakers, a Balenciaga hoodie, a MiuMiu handbag and a Hermes purse on the bus today.
