It’s always acceptable but once you’re old enough to a professional with a career, it’s not ideal. Like it or not, what you do is how people see you. It’s more than a little disjointed to see lawyers and electiricans trudging around in sneakers all the time. Just invest in finding a comfortable and good looking pair of loafers or pull-on work boots that are your “go-to”. And if your day-to-day look is just sort of jeans and a polo, consider camp mocs or something. Sneakers are functional footwear and although you can wear them whenever they are best as functional footwear.

wrong. for sneakers to be grown up looking they need to have a simplistic upper. minimalistic leather uppers might sound good on paper but in real life they usually look childish and questionable.

Ok. Let me rephrase. It might be “normal” but it doesn’t look ideal. Hard truth is that dressing well is contextual. You want to look like you’re higher up on the social hierarchy. If you’re a white collar professional, you will look “good” when you dress like a partner of a firm you would work for, not when you dress like a sandlot kid. Yeah you can get away with it on the weekends or running errands or whatever and it’s “normal” but it’s not exactly a particularly good look.
