I dont remember who said it, but people who have a lot of tattoos or piercings think that external things control them and they are powerless to change themselves, so they do radical things like dye their hair, get ttattoos and piercings to change something about themselves quickly.
In contrast you have people who workout and look good (not over obsess like bodybuilding 20+ inch arms, but look perportional, have some a little fat so they aren't overly skinny) are more likely to believe they have the power to change themselves and outward circumstances don't have the last say on who they are.
On an anecdote level, my ex had some tattoos and a nose piercing and really thought nothing of it. But she was absolutely miserable. She wanted me to join her but im too bloomer for that, I've been depressed, Ive been a mad man and did whatever I wanted and didnt care who I hurt, so I was at the point where I know from experience its better to be kind and loving because not caring about how you treat people hurts a lot. She absolutely gloated when I would admit defeat. She loved when i was sad, angry and down. Now that I look back at it, it makes a lot of sense. Also too, the who nose ring theory saying that people who have them make their pain their identity. I believe it. People that are dawn to this life style tend to be hurting people.
