I'm looking for something to keep my melon cool, and also add a little character to my outfit. Straw boaters were all the rage back in the (g)olden days, so I thought I might get one of those. Do I need to go full formal to pull it off? I usually wear long-sleeve shirt and shorts. I'm wary of fedoras, trilbys, etc., as they look cheap and make you look like a tourist.

1. You won't pull it off (no one can, it's not 1925)
2. You'll be "that guy with the hat"

Why do they still make them, then?
And so what is acceptable summer headwear in 2025?

because old british tourists wear them. We're not in the 1930's anymore you can just skip the hat. You won't be considered lazy or a slob if you don't wear a hat in public, but if your hairstyle is bad then try any cap that's not a ball cap or a flat cap

they're functional, so who cares
I wear Panama hats in summer, and yes, people sometimes laugh, but again, who cares
I don't like my neck burnt nor slanting my eyes because of the sun

I get nothing but compliments wearing a Panama, especially if I'm wearing something like a suit or suit separates.

I'd say you need to dress it up, boater looks silly in modern casual wear, but looks great in old fashioned casual like a seersucker suit. Look for a hat style associated with more casual wear for something that won't clash in formalities. Panama is one that works well dressed down but does have a limit. There's plenty of generic straw hats that could probably work, don't know what their name is though.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, that's what I thought regarding the boater. It might work better in the fall with a more layered outfit rather than just shirt and shorts. That said, I never liked those shaped hats, so I very much prefer the clean lines of the boater.

>I get nothing but compliments
compliments are common, from men and women alike, but sometimes people inevitably laugh even if it's not in a mean way

The hat supposedly comes from the gondoliers in Venice so a full suit isn't required or anything. Make of that what you will.

I know, but the subsequent popularity among the regular folx kind of overshadowed that. Hopefully, I'll do a little haul over the weekend, so I will see what stores have in stock.

Who cares what girls like? Not even other girls, that's who.

So what're some good hat types to wear with casual summer fits that don't look like larp? Baseball caps feel a bit too sporty to suit every fit. Bucket hat? Boonie?

I'm bald so I need something to cover up my dome when it's blazing.
