To me it seems like some sort of parasitic relationship, one that becomes a facet of their personality.
I know people that, for example, refuse to believe that moldy food is bad, and in a very mentally ill way, seem to intentionally eat moldy food believing it to be good for them. So it seems to me that in a similar way, the mold being the parasite, has hijacked the mentality of the individual to ensure it's survival. Same as the reluctance to acknowledge the unhealthy appearance of mutated skin.
