American visiting blue area for two-three weeks. What is the advice you’d give me on what is appropriate clothing and what to avoid? From lurking a bit, it looks like wearing baseball caps is considered a worse trait than just being bald? And don’t wear shorts unless they’re above the knee? Can you wear shorts and tee shirts everywhere, or are polos and button-down shirts the way? Is there a time of day when you should be in slacks? What about jeans? Is it okay to wear them in the evening or only during the day? Will I be denied service anywhere for wearing jeans?

I want to be able to go anywhere, any store, any restaurant and be respectful and respected (and be less of a mark for the gypsies)

For shoes I’m only bringing my cream nautica boat sneakers and my Nike trail runners. I’m open to buying shoes in Europe.

Assuming you're not genuinely retarded but rather just autist, it's going to be fine. Everybody wears jeans + t-shirt everywhere all the time, so don't stress about it. Wear whatever is appropriate for the weather and bring comfy shoes since you'll be walking a lot.

I would hazard a guess that most high end restaurants will be business casual, unless you go to an ultra posh place that requires a jacket, so dress shirt and chinos will get you in almost anywhere with no problems. Discotechas will probably have a similar code to ones in the states in Vegas or whatever. Again, some slacks and a short or long sleeve button up will probably be fine, but you generally want to dress to impress at a club.
Overall, just dress nicely but casually and no one will blink an eye.

Reportin' from the area.
Nobody in Germany will care what you wear. Germans are the worst dressed people on the planet.
In France, if it's the summer then nobody will care either because whatever helps you stay cool in the heat just goes. Sure, ifyou show up to a high-ish end restaurant in shorts, people will judge you but your being american will be excuse enough to let you in.
Swiss people only care about being home at 7 and going to sleep after working a 9-5 they extend into a 7-6.
If you drop by Luxembourg, you'll see that people there are mostly boring and the only ones who dress "up" are junior consultants trying to improve their bosses and retired bankers. The rest dress like germans but the french influence prevents them from going birks 'n socks.
>t. currently on the morning train to Luxembourg-Ville

Baseball caps are commonly worn in summertime. It will be very warm in this area in July/August, except high enough in the Alps of course where it is always cold and often windy

Below-the-knee shorts have been out of fashion for what, two decades now? If you still have any, trash them. Generally speaking, zoomers wear 5-to-7 inch inseam shorts, boomers wear 7-to-11 inch inseam shorts

You'll be in shorts, t-shirt and sneakers most of the time like everyone else, it's summertime and often sweltering. Bring sunglasses and a hat, a rainjacket for occasional rainy/stormy days, and a set of nicer clothes for evening meals at fancier restaurants if you intend to go to any, such as chinos and a polo or dress shirt

You can absolutely wear baseball caps. try to be less self conscious and have a good time instead.
I think the only place where shorts and tank tops may be frowned upon is if you visit a church.

I lived in Germany for 4 years in Hesse and the first year or so I tried to dress Euro. After that I just started wearing whatever I want including baseball caps and realized I don't really care about blending in. Only euro thing I do now is scarfs in the winter which are very comfy
