/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SERVICE BOOT EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

I've had these for about 3 weeks now. They were comfy on the sole right out of the box but the sides were a bit tight and needed to be broken in. Now that everything has loosened up, they are quite comfortable. My feet did not feel tired after this 5 mile hike through mountainous terrain uphill, muddy downward slopes, and twisting pathways overgrown with tree roots. But boy did my calves and thighs feel sore

Did the Beckman's explode in popularity recently? Only after I bought them it seems like they get brought up all the time in every boot thread.
I like their look and build, but hate the way the speed hooks prematurely wear out the tongue.

You can just get Clarks and be fine. They're cheap enough you don't feel like you need to baby them and you'll get several years out of them before you even think of replacing them

I'm not sure if it applies but I like my jim green vellies. If you're fine with potato last and hard rubber sole I've thrashed mine and they've held up great. At $100 they're basically disposable, but I did add some superfeet blue insoles because they have basically no arch support. Love how roomy the toes are for walking, but I do have hobbit feet high arches and a wide forefoot.

Clarks look fine but I'm not a fan of the loose sloppy heel and tight toe box. No steel shank kinda makes them suck for just walking too.

Want a pair of roughout boots but dont want to wait half a year for them.

Do I grab hawthorne muleskinner Iron Rangers or some quick ship nicks roberts in 64 RO? Wardrobe is predominantly dark colors. Indigo, black, or overdyed denim on bottom. Black/white tee on top. Perfecto or black denim jacket if its cold.

Just a continuation of >>18475302 from the last cross-thread, the break-in was brutal but after about 48 hours of wear they feel so much better. Comfortable, even.

The collar started out extremely stiff but I'm glad I listened and didn't return my pair, because they do get supple after a few wears. Everything is starting to mold to the shape of my foot except for the insole which is made of thick veg-tan. So thanks for making me keep the Beckman's you retards.

I think it's the buckle and the long shaft, I much rather prefer cowboy boots. The buckle is too feminine IMHO, and they are super expensive and use the roughest toughest and thick leathers, that isn't too comfortable. I also think that it's because they are easy to put on and off but for that same purpose I rather wear Chelsea boots. I dress like an adult with dress pants and I'm not using jeans on a daily basis.

But everyone's different, it's up to taste. If I had unlimited money I would buy them.

I don't know what you faggots do for boots, but I wear Georgia boot logger hightops with the low heel and steel toe. They last about a year doing manual labor. They stay waterproof for about 6 months before they start bleeding in at the tong. Normally I grease them when I first get them and then just let them ride till they crack behind the toe or split at the seam to the sole. I've had the laces last the entire life of the boot or I've had to replace them once in the life of the boot. They're pretty decent for the price. I've had danners before and they let me down 2 months in splitting at the sole.

Danner really is awful. I've had a pair of hiking shoes and boots fall apart on me in less than 6 months just wearing them on very light hikes. I don't know how they stay in business, because it can't just be the name.

If you only care about looks, Soloshits do look good. I've often considered buying a couple pairs, because, like converse, the color options appeal to me. But then I don't buy them because I know the quality would disappoint me. But to each their own.

Cotton is just a soft, natural fiber that is good for buffing, and can be washed easily. Idk why you couldn't use an eyeglass cloth, but I wouldn't.

The big picture are olive with a black wax coating that will wear away in time. Then the other two are a Mister Lou and a Boss so the toe profiles give some variety. Ive also got a preorder in for an umber cxl pair due in October and some IH collab Lous in burlap roughout coming next week. Which is all to say I know my size and dont want to fuck around with unknown lasts.

Plus at ~1400+ I'd rather just go full custom from Role Club or Unsung. Yes it'll be more expensive than Clinch or Lofgren, but at that point youre spending fuck you money on boots and may as well max out.

Yeah, I get that. I have a preorder for a pair of the Ship John Derroll boots with the upper leathers changed to the standard black CXL horsehide. My other engineers are Role Clubs which are an absolute 10/10, but they are more "dressy" and I need a more robust, rugged pair for shitkicking, hence the Wescos.

If I were to invest a significant amount of money again in some engineers, I would 100% order the Unsungs in black maryam with some Dr Soles. I've never owned any boots in the Maryam horse, but in my opinion its the most gorgeous and well balanced horsehide out there.

They're nice to have, but if you're wearing them everyday without drying them out for at least 24h you'll get mildew. Else they're meant for long term storage to prevent the toes from curling up.

I got some shoe trees from Muji and just a side note, sand the tip of those fuckers down. They made some deep cuts in the foot bed of my beckman's.

Anyone got any /fa/ boot sock recommendations? Thicker merino wool (wearable year round preferably). When I try to search for this I only get these ugly tactical/hiking socks but nothing that actually goes with a dressier boot, and all /fa/ socks are very thin (obviously for dress shoes)

First time posting in /btg/, donโ€™t plan on being a regular just passing through because I saw Redwing mentioned and was curious.
Been wearing Redwingโ€™s amber Iron Rangerโ€™s for about a year and a half, recently picked up a black pair to better match some outfits.
What are your guys opinions on Redwing in general and the Iron Rangers specifically? From skimming the thread it seemed mostly positive about the brand (not 100%) but couldnโ€™t decide about IRโ€™s.

Peopleโ€™s main problem with RedWing is the aggressive toebox that starts to look like a clown shoe once the leather around it softens. Thats why the japanese flatbox Beckman is popular with enthusiasts, but its hard to find unless youre willing to pay a premium to ship from Japan.
