Most of the country outside the major cities has no access to anything better than mall-tier clothing stores. Only so much you can do when you're so limited. Yes, you can buy online, but there's no way to know if shit will fit you right and returning stuff if it doesn't is more hassle than it's worth for a lot of people.

to be clear they're traditionally southern states but effectively aren't any more, kind of like how kentucky and west virginia were traditionally northern states but effectively aren't any more.
Imo map just needs to include Missouri to be the full spread of plausibly southern states all wrapped up into one.

How?
It's "the Great Lakes" state. It's nearly surrounded by the Great Lakes. If you look at a map of the U.S.A., it's the state nestled against those very large lakes.
Plus it's shaped like left-handed mitten.

Marylander here. The only reason our state didn't secede from the union and join the confederacy is because the union/federal government held the cities hostage. Maryland was a slave holding state, and a lot of our culture is still southern, but nowadays Maryland is more of a mixture between the north and south. Traditionally whenever the southern states got together to politically powwow Maryland is always included.

It's a mixture of both the northeastern corridor and the south. In my experience people who know Maryland history and travel outside of the metropolitan area will say Southern. People who just stay within the Baltimore and DC areas say North.
Our state song was a confederate song until they got rid of it in like 2021, along with all of those statues of old slave owners that were put up throughout the state to intimidate black people.

As for fashion, jeans and cowboy boots are ubiquitous where I live. On top its a 50/50 chance of a golf polo or a pearl snap, then another 50/50 chance of a baseball cap or cowboy hat. Usually its polo+baseball hat, pearl snap + cowboy hat, but not always.

Yeah, I'm in about the same size area and it's not much better. We're a big outdoor tourism spot so we've got a Patagonia store, a Fjallraven store, tons of ski and fly fishing shops that sell clothes for that stuff, some boutiques for rich bitches that want to larp as cowgirls, etc. but options are very limited for regular clothes. We do have a Macy's but it's tiny and leans heavily toward outdoor brands as well.

to be fair they're talking about numbers in the "1 to 20 or so people" range. India, Illinois, and Kansas are stereotyped identically to southerners so some people just assume, and there's a historical claim to az and nm from the CSA that many people still support. Pennsylvania and ohio though I can't even pretend to defend. I guess some people heard pennsyltucky and... felt prejudiced that moment?

Do you have any idea how big Texas is? Los Angeles to El Paso is closer than El Paso to Houston. Its bigger than every European country sans Russia, and more geographically diverse. Its too big to be any one thing and it sure as shit isn't "the" southern state (my vote goes to MS or GA. LA is too French).

East Texas is the south. North Texas and the panhandle is the southern edge of the plains and have more in common with (God forgive me) Oklahoma than with Houston. Everything south of DFW and west of the I35 is different varieties of Southwest. Ranging from cowboy-lite in Austin/San Antionio to straight up north Mexico further south.

in the original 13 colonies wealth was fairly concentrated in wealthy families that had moved from europe. these continued to be the upper class for most of american history and their wealth expanded with industrialization and colonialism after american independence. this cultural class you can call Yankees. over time some new money joined the old money, guys like carnegie. but for the most part new money had to sort of adapt to the old money ways and overall the east coast industrialists turned out just like the older yankees in dress and culture. in a lot of ways yanks were just europeans.

much of the south never economically recovered from the civil war and it's upper class, that somewhat resembled the yanks prewar, began to decay. the real wealth creation in the south didn't happen until oil and natural gas started being drilled in texas. suddenly the wealthy there were guys who just owned lots of farm land, once-settlers who had moved west and didn't necessarily ever posses any wealth, and certainly not the kind of prep school wealth the yanks had. newly minted millionaires were never exposed to prep school or matching leather or any of the preppy menswear stuff you still hear about now.

these new rich men from texas had the wealth to impact culture and politics and preserving and increasing their wealth was a driving force in their politics. there were maximum quotas for oil extraction and the party unified around raising them. basically with southern money entering politics the yankees were finally challenged and with this power shift came an end to yankee dominance in culture.

the yank aesthetic was oppulent but less showy. yanks hung out with other yanks and all did yank shit together. texans got rich and were still surrounded by poor texans and the oppulence was a bit less... subtle. precursor to the mcmansions and bullshit of today, stuff that's uniquely american.

tl;dr basically blame texan oil money for the walmart fashion of today.
