I wear a wristwatch so that I don't have to pull out my phone like an NPC normalfag smartphone addict every time I need to check the time. Imagine doing the whole song and dance of sticking your hand in your pocket, doing a weird pose if you're sitting down, pulling your phone out, gawking at a stupid slab of glass, just to check the time, when you can just discretely turn your wrist towards yourself, glance at your wristwatch like a man, and get on with your day, all in a matter of a couple of seconds.

>Smartphone
People switched from pocket watches to wristwatches for a reason, and a checking the time in a smartphone is way clunkier than it was with a pocket watch. (Since the latter were small and smooth, carried in easy to access vest or coat pockets, and usually on a chain that made it easy to pull out, unlike a modern phone that you usually have to wrench out of a pants pocket with your fingertips.)

Among young normies, a garish dinner plate is MORE acceptable than an understated 34mm watch if anything. Watch enthusiasts are obsessed with small diameters (in part because 90% of them seem to have tiny wrists) but regular people buy gigiantic mallwatches and think nothing of it, and see anything under about 40mm as about the equivalent of wearing a fedora.

Right, because their opinion matters. The watch that looks best on you depends on your wrist size, wearing something that looks ugly on you because someone else told you to is idiocy and insecrity.

Yeah, but the quote was "widely seen as socially acceptable," not "looks good." I wear watches that are reasonably sized for my wrist (which is luckily relatively big, so 40mm on me looks like 34mm on the average r/watches poster) and don't go anywhere near tacky fashion watches, but that doesn't mean it isn't socially acceptable to wear those abominations, tons of guys do and if you're under 40 and not rich you're probably more likely to get shit from your peers for wearing a tasteful watch than a huge gaudy one.

Right, so you put the phone in your pocket and you put another, tinier phone on your wrist. Not only that, they are ugly because they try to imitate a real watch poorly, and it only ends up accentuating the fact it's not a real watch.
I deliberately wear mechanical watches and have bought an e-reader to avoid getting distracted by my phone. This is a huge advantage of a wristwatch that is just that.

What I dont get is people who spend a lot of money on a watch but then get a shitty watch

Like rolex, there are two good rolexs. the 36mm explorer and the yacht master 2. Yet there are people who spend tens of thousands getting shit like day dates. Why? It's a rolex, get a rolex, get the yacht master 2 and if you cant afford that get something else. Like, you want a diver get a fifty fathoms, but then dont buy a fucking blancpain anything else. etc.

In my opinion, itโ€™s a way better way of displaying wealth, unlike those super loud obnoxious cars some rich people drive. Women donโ€™t care if the car goes vroom, they care about how much it cost because they want to gauge how much they can mooch off of them.

I've never had one that was a whole second phone, just a bluetooth accessory. I also have always worn real watches most of the time. There are some niche situations where the smartwatch is nice though. I used a previous one while working as a mechanic and it was nice because I could leave my phone on my tool cart where it was safe and then be able to see who was calling or texting me so I could know if it was worth stopping what I was doing and washing up so I could handle my phone and answer. Later, I was in a field where everything was done in UTC time, and a smartwatch with a face like the one in my pic was by far the cheapest way to get a watch with a big easily readable second time zone display. They also have a much more intuitive and quick interface for setting timers etc. than a "dumb" digital/quartz watch while still avoiding the need to take your phone out and use it for that.

I also just don't have that phone distraction tendency that a lot of people seem to, though. I only really use mine when I've got an actual reason to, or when I've genuinely got nothing better to do - stuck in a waiting room or whatever. Maybe the whole calculus is different for me because of that.

One of the only devices left in this world made for longevity.

Your $500 phones will be replaced in 3-5 years conservatively, 1-2 years if you're a consoomer.

A $200-$500 automatic watch alters your self worth, and your habits while also being a nice piece of masculine jewelry.

They're designed with longevity, to be handed down to your grandchildren, not trashed after 2-3 years.

Your first watch will make you start looking at other people's wrists, you will learn, brands, movements, and history, uncovering a secret club you didn't know about prior.

Watches are still cool even though you donโ€™t need them to tell time because theyโ€™re these fascinating little mechanical devices and features of Western history and culture. Time telling evolves out of the medieval monasteries and eventually becomes clocks and pocket watches and then watches and then ultimately gets put into phones. So clocks (and watches) are right up there with the combustion engine and thus classic or luxury cars. Itโ€™s just something that looks cool and is interesting from a mechanical, historical, and cultural perspective.
