Saigon or Saville Row. Not worth anything in between unless you have personal connections you can strengthen or want a real long-term relationship with the tailor.

>>18491345 is the correct answer. Look at the material tag and avoid anything that isn't 100% wool or cotton or linen. Next look at fit, you need the jacket to fit your shoulders and have the jacket in your length. The pants need to at least make it around your waist and close, there's usually a couple of inches of seam play there. Everything else will likely be able to be adjusted to your body like sleeves and hem length.

I checked their suits sorting from high to low and they all seem to be polyester blends. Maybe Macy's online is different than Macy's stores. Speaking of mall suits, I know I saw sub-$500 100% wool suits at Banana Republic and Massimo Dutti so they might be an option if there are no thrift stores around.

Yeah that's fine as well, though I'm not knowledgeable about what constitutes a good blend, just avoid the polyester and the rayon. Of course 100% natural fibers isn't a guarantee of quality, but it does usually make it higher quality and more comfortable than a suit made of polyester. I would also avoid spandex personally even if its theoretically more comfortable since it breaks down easily.
>>18491518
Honestly if you're looking for decent suits in that price range a real men's store/ haberdashery will provide a better product hands down for a lot less frustration than trying to play the thrift game, even if you can't beat buying a whole suit that fits for under $15 at goodwill when you find the right sizes and materials. Alternatively, look on eBay, but you need to know your sizes already.

Never get anything with spandex in it, let alone a suit. Spandex blended bullshit stretches out over time and destroys the shape and fitting of the clothing item. If you need spandex in your suit, then it's too tight. Stop wearing slim fit suits. You'll only going to end up looking like a poorfag who couldn't afford a properly fitting suit so he's wearing hand me downs from his younger brother. A suit should be well-fitting but also roomy enough to drape on your body without wrinkling everywhere and being skintight.

try ebay, get your measurements, ask the seller questions about those measurements, fabric mix, etc

there might be a bit of trial and error but once you find a brand that fits you, look for other suits in that brand

Because modern suits are slim fit, so they need that stretch in the fabric, or else they would be unwearable.

Have you ever found a suit with rayon as part of the main fabric?
And if you're including lining materials you'll have to spend north of 3000USD/EUR to find a silk lined suit.

As >>18491345 has said, your only option is to go secondhand.
Good suits are not made today, just the same as good top hats or tricorn hats are not made today. Anything of that nature that is made today can only be found in halloween costume stores, and suits made today are quickly approaching the level of quality of a halloween costume.

Even the highest grade stuff, speaking of Saville Row.. they are no good. They are show pieces, the suits of the past were normal clothes, made to wear, those high end tailors, despite all their talent, are incapable of replicating this sense of everyday regularity in their suits.
To make a comparisan, it is like buying a pair of Converse, and comparing it to those high-end fashion shoes that look like Converse, I don't know their names, I'm sure you've seen them. The former are regular shoes while the latter, despite being of high quality, are show pieces and cannot be comfortably worn on the regular, and so in this way are inadequate.

A lot of that is because the fabrics have changed. No one wants or needs heavy weight wools since HVAC became nearly ubiquitous globally. Back then light weight wools were called tropical weight- now nearly all modern suit wools are those tropical weights or lighter. There's supposedly a small handful of mills producing the vintage fabrics but very few do.

1: the shells pure wool,
2: i'm a rare size so ebay has pretty slim pickings for me
3: i just like the style

i've had jackets from next before, they fit me well enough so i specifically went looking for suits from next knowing their sizing is gonna be consistent
i've had mishaps before with suits that were listed as my "size" but were too big when they arrived
its nice to have that assurance

plus i found a proper vintage in navy pinstripe for like half the price so it evens out

What's the most flattering lapel width if I'm both? I got two suits with different lapel widths and I'm not sure which one to keep based on my body proportions.

Good suit ensemble design is confusing and full of either contradictions or conditional statements that are impossible to nail down completely- so here I'm going to make things even worse.

Principle job of the suit should be to draw your eye up to your face, so you want things proportional and not sticking out or the eye gets drawn to that feature, meanwhile, you want your suit to downplay negatives and accentuate positive characteristics of your body. See the attached pictures which are from "Dressing the man", considered one of the gold standard pieces for dressing well in a suit.

As for lapels, from Allan Flusser's "Clothes and the man", He basically states in that the lapel width should be proportionate to the jacket, slightly less than halfway between the collar and the shoulder line, generally 3 1/2 inches. In "Dressing the man" published 17 years later he states that it should be 2/5's to 3/5th the distance between collar and shoulder, but states it results in a notch lapel of about 3 3/8 to 4 1/4 inches. I would probably go with the "slightly less than half".

He says to use the jacket shoulder to frame the face, but didnt elaborate much about the shoulders beyond being proportionate and preferring natural-shoulder cuts.

This advice, which so many menswear enthusiasts have parroted is the worst thing ever.

Most people have a long face, that's what all humans faces generally look like unless you're 400 lbs, and so it happens, 99% of people are directed towards the horrendous cutaway collar, as that is the compliment to the long face.

The collar, when properly shaped, forms a geometric pattern with the shape of the tie and the shape of the lapels, this is what you should be focussed on when you put together a shirt, tie, and jacket, the abstract design it forms on your chest, not the way it compliments your face, because that's just totally bogus

This is also another piece of terrible misguided advice that has served to only push people away from good style

You can be skinny and wear big lapels and still look good.
But you cannot be skinny and wear small lapels, nor can you be big and wear small lapels, basically small lapels look stupid and should never be worn. But because most people are slimmer than they are fat, this advice gears everyone towards tiny slim lapels
