for sun protection if you don't want to cover yourself in sunscreen every day. its really popular in asia and used to be the norm worldwide. wearing a jacket is more comfortable than a long sleeve shirt though even if the material isn't as breathable because it's not right up against your skin. that's why everyone has jackets on in old timey photos.

clothes didn't make you sweat as much back then because they were natural materials and tended to be thinner with looser weaves. and the period of time we're talking about the world was in a little ice age.

i forgot but bug protection was also a big reason back when people spent more time outside. if you've ever been in a region with a lot of bugs you'd understand. and insect populations were higher back then (no roundup more forest less extinct species etc)
