its possible you have too much protein in your hair. that can make your hair frizzy. check if your shampoo and conditioner have protein.
do your hair products have sulfates or denatured alcohol in them? those can be very harsh.
i would try nopoo for a while and see if that works (basically only condition your hair no shampoo). that sounds crazy but it works. on wash days scrub thru your hair + scalp for a long time with conditioner, like five minutes.
you could try a leave in conditioner but i dont know anything about those i dont use them.
dont scrub your hair dry, use something soft like an old shirt or baby towel. you could use heat protectant spray and dry it some of the way but let it air dry after and DONT touch it

Can only speak for myself but this has worked wonders for me, though my hair is pretty different from OP's

just looks hella dry. if moisturizing products don't work on you do a porosity test. if you have low porosity straw-like hair then conventional moisturizing products won't work because they simply don't get absorbed. there's a whole reddit board for it with good info.
>my hair used to be smoother and shiny now it looks like shit
also do you have dandruff or any sort of scalp problems? fix those as well.
get tested for nutritional deficiencies.
do you have inflammation? identify sources (dietary, environmental, underlying health cond etc) and minimize them.
silk pillowcases/bonnet never hurts.
wash your pillowcases and bedsheets.
wash your neck/face not just scalp.
etc can be a lot of causes just some ideas what trees to bark up. reddit is honestly kinda good for this stuff if you dyor and spend a day or two learning everything.

>maybe ive been rough with a towel
towel dry super super super gently. just flip your head upside down and like lightly pat dry. you don't need to get a ton out your hair type should? dry pretty fast.

>can i reverse this?
ya prly.

>air drying
heat protectant + blow dry prly gonna be what you want most of the time.
