They were basically just early internet memes, people thought it was funny but then it turned into an unironic trend. Aside from that though I think it was a reaction to Gen X's smug sarcasm and just the generally dark state of the world at that time, 9/11 at one end of our adolescent decade and an economic collapse at the other with war in between, and things like dinosaurs were probably people clinging to their childhoods that happened in the '90s before everything went to shit. That's all kind of speculative on my part though since I'm at the older end of the generation and a lot of that stuff was really popular with people a few years younger than me, I think my end had more in common with late Xers than later Millennials in terms of attitudes and cultural influences.

I'm a late gen X/early millennial and I concurr with your take. The 90's zeitgeist was sort of a bleak, cynical sarcasm, a sort of nihilism where nothing matteted but at the same time everything was too serious.
The 00s and the early internet days wrre a reaction against that. People wanted to cheer up, enjoy the moment and have fun. That came with a youthful carefree attitude that clinged to childhood. Basically, early.millennials tried to delay adulthood for as long as possible because the future was grim.
At the same time, hipsters of that era were self-aware of their silliness and didn't take themselves seriously. Or at least, not as seriously as their critics took them.
Mid to late millennials, however, were different in that regard. As it usually happens with late adopters or decond generations, they lacked the nuance of the former folks and took everything at face value. As older millennials wete finslly forced into adulthood, a new bred of millennials became nerd culture obsessed wo/menchild.
Ah, I could ramble about this shit all day. Don't mind me, I've been feeling quite melancholic lately.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons I think "millennial" is a really stupid generational grouping, but so is Gen X. I think there ought to be a generation that's like 78-88, a 1980 Xer has way more in common with an '86 millennial than the '80 X has with a '65 X who's basically a boomer or the '86 millennial has with a '96 who's basically a zoomer.

Indeed. Technically I'm a genX but my experience and milestones closely match that of early millennials.
