When I quit cigarettes a while ago it was one of the best decisions in my life. There is nothing remotely pleasant about it after a year, you get desensitized to the buzz and it becomes an annoying habit. Vaping is better because you at least become addicted to the nicotine only, with cigarettes you also get addicted to the tar poisoning, not to mention you damage your sense of smell and lungs and stink of burnt garbage all the time. The quality of cigarette tobacco is shit, and has been for decades.
In all honesty, not smoking at all is the best option.

If you’re good looking and high status, you can pretty much do what you want within reason and it will be considered fashionable

Not him, but I saw the same in the US growing up. It was always some depressed redneck woman with a tired gaze, some poverty-stricken guy at a bus stop with a BMX bike, or burnouts at a casino. The only time smoking was hip aside from the early 20th century was when hipsters were a thing and smoking American Spirits was what every hipster, crust punk, goth, or hipster puffed on. That was also the last time when a smoking section at a bar was a place to break the ice. Today, that’s an outdated relic and only the people who “missed the train,” so to speak, are who remain. Smoking is back in the 90s: dirty, uncool, and for old people.

I do like pipe tobacco but pipe smoking is just a pain in the ass and LARPy. Cigars are also nice but too expensive and very LARPy now as well. Cigarettes are easy, cheap, not LARPy, but they make you stink like shit and make your teeth yellow.

Non-flavored (English) tobacco still has peculiar taste based on the blend. Virginia tastes mildly sweet with hay or "green" (think the white core of a broken bush branch) if it's golden, kind of like cigarettes but several orders more refined. Darker virginias taste the same except more intense and smokier. Orientals taste like smoked meat and cumin. Burley tastes like roasted nuts. Black Cavendish (actually Burley that's smoked and covered in sugar syrup) tastes like raisins and figs.
I'm not going to glorify it, it's still an addictive habit but in my experience a lot better than actual cigarettes.
