How do preppy people avoid looking like 9 to 5 wagies when wearing prep?

They no longer exist. The classic WASP yacht club look is a thing of the past.

It really comes down to the quality and fit of the item in question. I have a Fred Perry polo that makes me look like I work at Best Buy and a Tommy Hilfiger polo that commands respect.

A lot of people seem to no longer understand what preppy actually is. Preppy is not merely dressing like some boarding school uniformed student or white collar wagie. Preppy is dressing like that with bits of eccentricity here and there. Standards have fallen so low that wearing salmon shorts or patchwork shirts and backwards hats are no longer inappropriate for occasions where in the past anything other than strait laced collared shirt and trousers would have been advised.

So to answer your question, I guess there’s to ways to do it. The first is to lean into what preppy actually is. And the second is to go even further beyond. Personally, I have a friend who is a blue collar wagie but likes to dress extremely trad: blue OCBDs tucked into pants, white polo shirts, etc. He just adds little blue collar pieces like a Detroit jacket over his Oxford cloth button down or sleeves rolled up to show off his tattoos and he gets a lot of compliments for his dress. So hopefully you get what I’m saying. It’s not just about dress trad. It’s about dressing trad with a bit of flair.

>9 to 5 wagies
Ah yes, the tranny NEET chuds of this board thinking looking like a man with a job is "cringe", as opposed to perpetually dressing like a 14 year old.

>a man with a job
a dead end job with little to no growth at the bottom of the corporate ladder. fixed that for you
does the term "wage" in the word "wagie" mean anything to you?
