Why do basic all-around handymen who know how to frame, wire up outlets, and install plumbing think they deserve to make 150 dollars an hour? I have a simple project that I need done for me, but I can't afford for some asshole to come in and do rushed, shoddy work for an ultra-premium price. Do they think they're slick when they quote me a job price? Do they think I don't understand their game and that it's going to end up with them making well over 100 dollars an hour?

Finishing attic space - delusional or realistic? Archived /diy/
I want a home office and my choices are finding a space to finish or building an addition on the back of the house.

The attic is 7 feet at the peak, and 8ish feet apart where the beams hit the joists. The joists are 2x4, spaced 24 inches.

Is it possible to:
> Make the triangle beams into verticals so the ceiling of the room isn't a tiny narrow peak
> Shore up the joists to support the weight of flooring and furniture

And assuming it's possible, is it even worth what the cost and time would be?

This is the worst of my windows.
Will post 9 pictures total to start with.
The other windows I can repair myself.
This one is rotting, and you can see the wood has .. shrunk? Or like sucked-in in places.
Maybe it's where the rot is collapsing the wood.
On the inside in one spot there seemed to be a lump of fungus or something which has grown on the inside of the window.
I need to keep this window functional and beautiful for another 2 years to keep my wife happy until we can afford to replace it.
Also there's an owners corporation over multiple properties on this one property, so I need to keep those dickheads happy too.

As you can see, there's clearly already been repairs in the past (not by me) as there's already old filler of some kind been applied.

My plan so far is
>pray to the gods for a sheet of glass not to come flying out at me
>dig out all the rot in the vertical thingo
>spray with wood hardener
>inserts some 18x18mm H3 treated pine as structural support
>add small L-bracket where it meets the horizontal window thingo
>rebuild the rest of the vertical with builders bog
>repeat the same process for the horizontal, and attach the horizantal H3 treated pine to the L-brackets for support
>make it all beautiful & nicely painted etc afterwards
I've got a shedload of tools and gear already so I'm okay on that front

upgrade to fully enclosed garage with auto-doors?

Concrete costs $200/yrd, more or less. 6" slab means 6sq yards per cubic, so a 9yrd full load = 54sq yards or 6x9yrs or 18x27' slab for $1800 not counting steel, and maybe some gravel and fabric.

then frame up the outside walls maybe with some of this shit (let in light) and frame ends for garage doors.

Sounds lot cheaper than prices I'm seeing for "new detached two car".

WTF am I missing?

Pole Barn Budget Build - Phase 3 - Roof, Framing & Exterior Archived /diy/
5.2×4.2m unobstructed floorplan. Roof is 5.5×4.3m. it is built off of the north wall of our solar power equipment and PV mount shed.

old thread:
>>2900858

finally got the 240v buried from the house to the solar power system. that has been the big hold up for months. I bought furring strips or the roof yesterday, installed them today. finished the footer for the north wall. I was 10cm short of the footer meeting the post because I forgot aboot off-the-shelf dimensional lumber specs when drafting. rather than try some shite splice with wood, I dug down beside the corner post, drove rebar into the clay, used screws for anchors, and poured a mini-footer good enough for a (mostly) non load bearing wall. (roof load is carried by a beam .75m back from this wall.) I will let the concrete fully cure to 3 days before I start putting in the studs & furring for the steel siding. until then, I can still frame in for windows.

we have the steel panels on hand to complete the roof as soon as the studs are up. the structural calculations say I don't even need the wall/studs up to install the steel roof, but it's only 3 days, and due to extreme winds that can occur, I lean to the side of caution.

I will update as I progress.

>spray like 3 passes of the top coat within a couple minutes - still pretty thin: can almost see primer underneath in certain spots.
>hang dry in garage which is like 90F and 30% humidity

How do I get rid of these faggots? Archived /diy/
Some retard in my apartment complex seems to have apparently disintegrated into a pile of rotting flesh and dust that's being eaten by a million of these niggers at once, so they spread around the whole building and spawn in every shelf and any drawer that I open 24/7.
They seem to have set up an outpost in my apartment and live in each and every crevice that my landlord left open, of which there are a few that I really really don't want to touch since a lot of shit in my apartment is broken beyond salvation already and if I attract any attention from management I will most definitely get assblasted with rent increases since they haven't increased my rent in 7 years because I fly under the radar.

But I really can't fucking handle them anymore and decided to something about it, so I
> bought an oversized dehumidifier that I will set to something ridiclously low and run 24/7 once it arrives, since those niggers need moisture for breeding.
> moved most of my daily operations into public spaces so I spend as little time as possible inside of my home (showering at the gym, working in the library etc.) in order to fuck up their food supply as much as possible. I basically only come home to brush my teeth and sleep at this point.

Is there something else that I can do that DOES NOT involve calling a "" professional"" exterminator who will ask for a few hundred wagie tokens after spraying some shit around for 5 minutes or gaslight me into thinking that tolerating these disgusting six-legged niggers is acceptable and widely common because "muh mites and spores" or some other made up bullshit? Do I just /diy/ mustard gas from cleaning supplies instead?
What can I do that's actually effective and not boomer-tier bullshit like spraying random soup ingredients around your walls and placeboeing yourself into thinking that it somehow works?

For clarification, it's not only silverfish but also that other annoying critter that looks the same but is worse for some reason.

I was wondering if /diy/ has any ideas on ways to use the power to reliably convert tainted water back into usable water. The main water uses at the moment are washing clothes, washing dishes, and showering.
My goal is to convert at least some of this used water back into clean water for washing clothes again or at minimum for use in less human stuff.
So basically boil it and distill it or evaporate and condense or what else can I do?

correctl tool for fitting up square tube & aluminum profiles Archived /diy/
I've recently started building some things out of welded mild steel square tube and aluminum profiles, using both square and miter joints. So far I've been getting by with a handheld bandsaw and angle grinder. But it takes an inordinate amount of time to get a decent fit-up - can't get a straight cut with the bandsaw and have to spend a long time grinding everything square, which then fucks with the dimensions of the part. Can't seem to get the angle grinder to cut the tube either, takes forever to grind through 30x30x2mm tube - and it seems like you have to burn through two cut-off wheels to get it done.

I've had some luck borrowing time on a stationary bandsaw and it seems like it would work, but that shit's quite expensive. Have also seen videos of people cutting up tubing with the angle grinder directly, dunno if my failure with it is an issue with the cut-off wheels I've got, the grinder itself or something about how I do it.

What's the "correct" way to do it - cut square tube into flat and miter joints? Am I supposed to invest in a stationary bandsaw? Perhaps a stationary circular saw with a metal cutting wheel? Does everyone just do it with the angle grinder? There are tons of tutorials on welding the tube together, and of course fitting up aluminum extrusion is like legos, but everyone skips over the actually hard part which is getting a nice fit-up without massive gaps that are a pain to weld

How to put a toilet in the closet? Archived /diy/
The current toilet situation is no longer a viable option in my home. A second toilet is needed and I refuse to pay literal thousands to have a plumber do something I could do.

If I know the tools, equipment, supplies and steps needed to carry out this project, then I don’t understand why I couldn’t do it myself.

I’ve tried looking up some (how to) videos and information about how to install a toilet in a closet from scratch so to speak but have had no success.

Everything I’ve read seems to only be geared towards repairing, replacing or simply fixing an already existing toilet.

I need to know how to do the whole thing but have yet to find any info. I can buy the toilet, the tools, supplies and everything else that I need, I just need to know how to do it.

The house plumbing is all PVC, I need to drill a hole in the floor, in install whatever is needed, put a toilet in, run a water line to
The toilet and tap into the main drain line. Can anyone point me to a book, website, video?

I had a 4in furnace vent coming out of pic related on muh roof. Its no longer used because we switched to heat pump. What's a good way to keep rain and critters from getting in there?
It's a fairly steep roof so I'm worried that just putting a rain cap on will allow water to splash up into it or snow to pile against it and get in.
I was going to leave the pipe on it but it won't stand straight because it's not attached to anything and I don't trust a tiny bead of silly cone to keep water out.
I don't want to pull the flashing because I'll surely ruin the shingles.

Insulation general Archived /diy/
Winter is coming! What are you doing to stay cozy/save on heating costs?
Me? I'm currently in the middle/at the start of various projects on the house I got.
>Windows
I'm changing the gaskets, they're done and leaking heat, just gotta figure out how to adjust the windows to get rid of the remaining gaps.
>attic
Already got a big-ish layer of rockwool in it, but apparently, nowadays you're going thicker. Contemplating if I should just plaster the whole area in a few cm of XPS, which would also give me a better walking surface and the option to store some stuff, without producing stupid ass rock wool dust.
>pipes
Not really worried about pic related, but my heating system in the basement has all its pipes uninsulated. While it does warm up my basement, the fact that the basement itself isn't really insulated does waste quite a lot of heat. So those pipes gonna get covered. Just wondering if it's really worth it to shell out for armaflex, or if I can just get random PE or rock wool insulation of my local big box store, which costs half as much as armaflex and seems to have a better λ as armaflex. For armaflex, I can only find λ ≤ 0,036W/(m·K) at 0°C at the various stores that sell it, but for the cheapos, I get about λ = 0,037W/(m·K) at 40°C, and armaflex lists 40°C only in their datasheet for all their products, and there its at 0.041, so worse. What gives?

Is there a cheap and easy way to storm-proof windows for high winds? Will hardware cloth do the job? I'm not talking about direct hits from tornados, but we get 60+ mph gusts out here quite often. Open to suggestions.

ain't there a GOOD way to detect hidden dry (or wet) rot when inspecting an old house, particularly when crawling the foundation?

https://www.dryrot.biz/fugenex.htm

these are supposed to be "installed" (drill into wood) to detect acid that dry rot produces.

What about maybe running slim-jim up in wood and rubbing it on sensor?

What about drilling a very small hole (like so the pesky RE agent listening at the hatch wont notice because of my loud banter and other noise) and testing a tiny amount of shavings?

Any issue adding a ridge board here? Just to make erecting those rafters easier, ie one side at time rather than as assembled units. This board would be non structural and shouldn't be placing additional loads on the framing it's 'hanging' from, correct?

I recently encountered fittings that look a bit like pic related, but they had a hex opening the pipe went into. The pipe itself has been threaded elsewhere, so I'm not sure if the shape is because they've been screwed on... there's no solder visible either.

Anyone know what they are?

sunbeam toaster 220v Archived /diy/
i recently ordered sumbeam t-35-1 from ebay and i want to convert it into 220v
from what i've researched i want nichrome wire worthy of resistance around 40 ohm and kinda stuck what diameter/ohm per meter to buy
have anyone converted the sunbeam toaster to 220v and if there so how hard was it? and what consumable bits i need? the part where nichrome wire connects to looks bit tricky to work on and on that regard i also dont know much to buy
when it arrives i will upload some pics of mine
