Initially Private Pyle was supposed to be a skinny redneck but Kubrick being insane thought it'd be better if he was a clumsy fat fuck so he made Vincent D'Onofrio gain 70lbs for the role which in real life made him take a trip to snapcity during that obstacle course scene and he had surgical reconstruction on his knee.
