Studies show there is literally zero difference in muscle gained between cohorts who trained eating high protein and in maintenance vs surplus, so why do people still advocate for bulking or lean bulking? More food != more muscle, it's been debunked, it's pointless

What the fuck are you talking about OP? Protein is not the same as calorie intake.

If you work out your "maintenance" is higher. To be sure you're getting enough calories you need to overshoot a bit. The study you probably talk about compared maintenance vs 5% surplus vs 15% surplus and guess what, it still found out that the surplus was getting faster gains.

There's a reason bulk/cut cycles are a thing.

was this on medium level lifters or was this on untrained normies?

Nigga he means high protein is a constant factor while maintenance and surplus refers to calories

shit my bad i misread.

There is no way you gain muscle without eating a surplus of calories. You are of course free to try it out and if you do please come back and tell us how it went.

And what studies are OP talking about?

recomping is real but it's insanely slow to the point that it might as well be useless, specially if you're advanced, recomping DOES work on newbie lifters though, but if you're been lifting for a few years IMO eating maintenance calories won't make your body build muscle and burn fat in the process, your body will barely do anything and will just be happy to have survived another day.

There's a reason cut and bulk cycles are a thing, when eating a lot you signal to your body that you have an abundance of nutrients and calories so it will hesitate less to buil muscle if you stimulate growth and destroy your biceps with curls, and if you cut agressively, your body will have to start burning fat no matter what, it will be impossible to hold onto fat when you need to burn it to live.

Cut and bulk cycles exist so that you can see your gains come faster and so that you can see your fat loss come faster when you do a bulk and a cut respectively, instead of the ambigüity that comes with just maintaining the calories, also, eating more than usual and eating less than usual by itself is a way to train the body, accustome it to conditions where it has less resources and conditions where it has lots of resources and is forced to use them, I think it's healthy to do that. Keep in mind tha tback in the day our ancestors could go on for days without a meal and then they would suddenly hunt a mammoth and they would be eating well for days, and then they would go hungry again, forcing their bodies to be efficient and withstand any condtions that come up.

if you're lean bulking there is a negligible difference in fat mass accumulation between maintenance and surplus calories.

Idk, I've noticed that I performed far better in the gym when bulking. I definitely saw a noticeable difference between maintenance and bulking. I did have some gains when maintaining but I always plateaued.

But now protein almost certainly does

200g a day for me

Yeah, I stopped deliberately cutting/bulking a long time ago. Despite all my autistic calorie-counting rainmain-tier bullshit, all I ever ended up doing was losing and gaining the same ~10lbs over and over again, with no actual gains at the end of the day. Complete waste of effort.

Now I just auto-regulate and eat however much just feels natural, without counting calories. And if bodyweight goes up past a certain point I just fast for a few days to reset.

Not him but here
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10620361/

>In the present sample, individuals who consumed larger energy surpluses—thereby gaining more body mass—experienced similar increases in strength and triceps and quadriceps muscle size but increased their skinfold thicknesses more compared to those who consumed smaller energy surpluses or maintenance calories. There was, however, weak evidence that larger surpluses resulted in greater gains in biceps thickness; the muscle group trained with the most volume and intensity. Thus, if an overfeeding strategy is followed, it may be more successful from a body composition standpoint if accompanied by a more stimulative training protocol for all muscle groups. Ultimately, however, given clearer evidence and a much stronger relationship between body mass gains and increases in the sum of skinfold thicknesses, we recommend conservative energy surpluses scaled to RT experience of 5–20% over maintenance energy or rates of weight gain of 0.25–0.5% of body mass per week, scaled to RT experience such that more advanced trainees consume smaller surpluses and gain weight more slowly.

Basically if you've been lifting more than a year divide your weight by 400 and that's how much you can gain in a week without getting fat.

Just lift and eat like a normal person and don't be a fat pig or a neurotic faggot about your diet. If you're hungry, eat. If you're not hungry, don't eat.
