When I was just starting out, I could not do a single pullup (very short torso combined with long + massive legs and ass didn't help much). After spending a bit over three months at the gym, during which most of my back stuff consisted of doing lat pulldowns and sitting rows on a cable machine, and also adding in barbell rows quite late (so don't think they had much influence), I was out with a friend and we came across some random hood pullup bar, he did a few, and I just grabbed it for joke's sake, and to my amazement I did 6-7 reps, chin over the bar, all of sudden, whereas I previously couldn't do any. If you don't have access to machines then try chest-supported dumbbell rows, or at least barbell rows (though those have the least of range of motion) and I think you will get strong enough to do actual pullups.
