I feel like crossfit should be a loose definition of a training methodology and not its own discipline. It's probably making a good job at making your body physically prepared for short burst intense physical challenges (like playing a sport or whatever).

Crossfit in theory is a good idea but the way it's typically trained is fucking retarded
Particularly high rep oly lifts, kipping pullups, that sort of stuff
Not to mention that the standards for certification are ridiculous - it literally doesn't matter if you've never seen a barbell before, you attend a weekend seminar and you're now a licensed crossfit coach. I wish I was kidding

General athleticism. It's typically a mix of compound lifts, plyometrics and cardio
A crossfit workout might look like this, for example:
Circuit of hang cleans, burpees, pull-ups and box jumps, as many reps as possible in thirty seconds, no breaks between exercises, 1 minute rest between cycles, five cycles total

This kind of training mostly builds your work capacity (ie prolonged exertion with minimal or no breaks) and as far as its goal goes, it is quite effective. The problem is that it forces you to do highly technical movements (oly lifts) when highly fatigued, which is a recipe for form breakdown and, subsequently, snap city

You can diversify your training, but at the expense of getting mediocre gains all across. Seems to me that crossfit tries to maximize endurance, strength and power at the same time, which is physically impossible, maximizing one stat already forces to rest a given joint for 2 days (or more for power) after training it.

Looking at the article, it's overwhelmingly due to ring dips/ring muscle ups. It looks like Crossfit has a total rep requirement e.g. "you must do 45 ring dips to advance" which I think is really stupid.
"How many ring dips can you do in one set?" could be a contest challenge that wouldn't injure anyone, I think.

It's already discovered. We know the best ways to build new muscle, recruit existing muscle with neuron effeciency, increase endurance and aerobic capacity. The issue is how to sequence it into a coherent training plan without sacrificing. For most non-enhanced athletes the muscle gain is nothing they've probably capped out on what the natty limit would be for their sport. All they're doing there is maintence so their other exercise doesn't dig into their lean mass.

greg glass was right when he said that even if you only care about size and aesthetics, you are better off doing crossfit than trying to bodybuild without drugs. there used to be alot of pretty strong crossfitters who'd train at my gym when they're "box" was closed. 600lb squats and deads, 400lb jerks (from the rack, i doubt they could ever clean and jerk it) and they all looked like bodybuilders. i don't see those people anymore though and i think crossfit's a dying trend at this point.

Because crossfit is a fitness cult invented by some fat asshole that takes regular exercises and makes them retarded. What IS crossfit exactly? What is a crossfitter? It's someone that does the exercises you already do but with a a stupid extra step like kipping. Crossfit is basically HIIT but some guy makes a lot of money from it every time you mention it. Saying you do crossfit unironically makes you stupid. Every time a guy at the gym mentions it I have to restrain myself from sperging out about it. I mean it's like instead of doing regular masturbating you do crosswank and for every 30 strokes you stop and stick a finger up your ass and you get to feel a part of something when you do it. No wonder it's mostly women that love it, they love anything spiritual.

I've never been a member of a crossfit gym but I've always done crossfit style workouts. Absolutely great way to get in really good shape. Just avoid the extreme stuff which is only necessary if you're training to compete in crossfit competitions. Certainly no reason I would ever do a Heavy Isabel or handstand push ups and shit like that. But I'll always do their regular workouts combining normal simple movements which is what 90% of crossfit is.

CrossFit needs to be divided into three areas for any good faith discussions.

Area 1: CrossFit methodology.

The purpose in the training is and always has been general athleticism. >>76291446 summarizes it pretty well. It isn't intended to give you maximum gains in any stat, just eliminate weaknesses with an extra emphasis on VO2 maxing and functional strength. This is why the first community to heavily get involved with CrossFit were military, law enforcement and fire department people. They mostly train for the same purpose, not for specific professional sports like Football or Bodybuilding.

Area 2: CrossFit HQ

CrossFit is a brand, and it is managed by a corporation. This is where all the petty money related stuff comes from, to include certifications, gym affiliates and The CrossFit Games. Over the years the priorities of CrossFit HQ have changed. From about 2000 to 2010, CrossFit HQ (founded and run by Greg Glassman) primarily pushed the franchise model of gaining local gym affiliates and selling high-dollar certification courses to maximize market size. This started with the aforementioned military/LEO/Fire Dept guys and eventually spread this to normies mostly in America. This focus changed after establishing the CrossFit Games as a competition to draw more normies into the sphere (this was also around the same time that things like Tough Mudders and Spartan Races were getting big).

Glassman actually loathed the CrossFit Games and thought they were annoying to put on, but kept at it because it got attention. He eventually dismantled CrossFit HQ's media team and tried to pivot the company away from the CrossFit Games around 2017, but failed. Glassman got forced out of CrossFit HQ and sold his ownership due to Cancel Culture in 2020.

CrossFit HQ has been managed by Private Equity ever since and has been hemorrhaging membership. It's currently slated to be sold to new owners sometime this year, likely after the 2025 CrossFit Games.

Area 3: The CrossFit Games

The competition started in 2007 primarily as a marketing gimmick to get normies interested in CrossFit and has been held every year since, normally in the summer. As mentioned before, Glassman never really cared about it and mostly turned over control of the competition to other people in CrossFit HQ. As the Games got more and more popular (peaking roughly in 2015), CrossFit HQ began devoting more and more resources to managing it and marketing it. An entire ecosystem of interconnected competitions developed that weren't managed directly by CrossFit HQ but were sometimes used to aid in the Games (which is the only competition directly run by HQ).

This led to the creation of the "CrossFit Athlete", which bares almost nothing in common with the average CrossFit person. Basically, "CrossFit" turned into a sport with its own unique rules and training styles that can't be cross-applied to other sports. You can't train to be professional Basketball Player and a professional CrossFit Athlete at the same time, even if the CrossFit methodology can help a Basketball player's general athleticism. These CrossFit Athletes are the roided folks you see getting pushed in CrossFit media.

Basically, there are two CrossFits now. Normie CrossFit and Professional CrossFit.
